Take off the factory sights or leave them on ?

All my rifles have scopes. There are two that I'm thinking of taking the factory sights off a Bar carbine(extremely accurate and I just got a new Remington 750 woodmaster. Would this affect accuracy by causing different bbl vibrations and is this a wise idea ? I haven't used irons in many yearsor should I just leave them on in case a scope fouls up ? 8)

I have three 7600's and one 7400 all with low mounted scopes.  I took the sights of all of them.  There was no change in the accuracy of the rifle with or without the open sights.  I found that with extremely low magnification scopes (1.5x), the front sight was visible while looking through the scope.  In my opinion, if you are not using see through mounts (which have their own problems!), the sights are just extra weight.

I suppose you could make a case for open sights being a back up in the event of a scope failure/damage.  I have never had this happen to me with modern, high quality scopes.  I never go on a trip with just one rifle so if I damage my scope my hint would not be over.  I would just need to return to camp for the other gun.

  I have scopes on all my rifles cause i can`t see like i used to.  Plus they all still have their factory sights. All except 2 that is. Both my Savage 99`s have the rear sight removed due to clearance needed for scopes.
  You mentioned iron sights for "back-up" i guess you have SEE-THROUGH
   scope mounts now so that would work.
  As far as bbl vibration goes , i don`t believe there would be any
   negative problems that would affect accuracy....IMO.

If you have see thru mounts get rid of them.
Carry a spare scope if your concerned about a back up or like mentioned earlier, have a spare rifle around. That's what I do.
But I like the extra scope idea if your off in the deep woods or mountains.
My rifles either didn't come with iron sights or I took them off. Why have the front sight hooking on things if your not going to use it? Also mentioned is the view of the front sight in the scope, distracting. Same issue with the rear sight and mounting the scope low enough.
I have not seen any change in accuracy on my rifles from 22's to 45-70 or the 7 rifles in-between them.
The only rifle wearing irons is my 94 Trapper, it has a ghost ring appeture. Something wrong with scoping such a compact rifle.

BTW I  have a Rem. 742 and 2 more in the family, nice rifles.

I installed a folding rear sight on my 760 years back.  Other then sighting it in I have never used it.  It is out of the way of the scope and I do not notice the front sight.

I have the Warne removable return to zero scope mounts on three of my rifles. MIKE.

I hate see through mounts  and never use them on a rifle. I bought a Rem7400 once very cheap. He sold it to me  as he couldn't hit any thing with it .the see through rings they were so loose you couldn't believe it. I put some weaver mouints and rings and bingo the rifle shot very good indeed.
   I don't like the extra little weight the steel mounts have so I just use Weaver bases and a compatable ring.
   I was thinking removing the sights might help the snagging problem in heavy brush. but I only carry one rifle so I was a little worried if the scope messed up. I don't have expensive scopes but they work.  If I remove a weaver style ring with scope I can still see the irons on my Remington 750 and Bar. 8)

What do you do with the screw holes after removing the sights? Can you just leave them empty? Will the original screws go back in without sticking up?

The originals will stick up.
See your local smith and get a set to fill the holes.

Country boy i plan to use the leupold quick release weaver style rings on my soon to get 750  for two reasons one i can change to a spare scope in the event of scope damage and two when i walk up on downed game the scope always comes off so i can use the iron sights if a quick shot is needed. I also have the weaver pivot mounts on my savage 99 308 which swings the scope to the side with out changing zero but i am not sure if these are still manufactured as the last time i purchased the pivots was in the early 70's

BRL the screws you took out for the scope mounts will fit flush in the iron sight holes .Just move them
