Any misfires w/ hammer extension?
« on: March 27, 2003, 04:28:09 AM »
I was just wondering if anyone else had any problems w/ misfires with a hammer extension installed. I recently installed a MB extension and had some misfires.

I have extensions on nearly all the frames I regularly shoot (4) and have NEVER had a problem in over 25 years of using hammer extensions on both handgun and carbine versions of Contenders.

Rico, do you have a low-mounted scope?  Be sure that extension isn't contacting the bottom of the scope during its travel.  The contact can be almost imperceptible during hammer travel but could be enough to significantly slow the hammer drop.  Look for a tiny spot of wear on the underside of the scope.

My first Contender was sent back to the factory 3 times for misfires.  22lr, 35 Rem, 357 Max with factory loads or reloads all misfired.  After I had it pointed at a deer one day and it misfired I called T/C madder than a hornet and asked to speak to the Service Manager.  After a few minutes of discussion he asked me if I was using a hammer extension.  I said yes and he said that the spring in the contender is marginal with some primers (magnum rifle primers) and that the hammer extension adds just enough weight to mess things up.  He told me I had weakend the spring to send it in and he would change the spring the day he got it.  Got it back in about a week and they even put a new wood grip on it since the old one was scratched (peace offering I guess).  Anyway, 8 years and no hammer extension latter, I have never had another misfire with the 9 calibers I currently shoot.

I know a lot of people use them, but from my experience my Contender will never have another one.  You did not say if your gun was a Contender or Encore, I hope Contender after this long post.

I had trouble with a Peterson extension--has posts on both sides, so it has extra weight.  But I have had no problem with the Bellm extension I now have on the Encore.

Thanks for the replys. It is a Encore. I recently had MB do a trigger job for me. W/ my muzzy I did not use the extension and had no problems. W/ my 30-06 I just got, is when I installed the extension. It did not have any contact w/ the scope. I was shooting factory Rem ammo. When I get a chance to get back to the range I'll see If I can get it to duplicate.

Would a couple of dry fires have any bearing on the situation?

Thanks,
Ric

Seems like I read that dry firing will mess up the rebound spring in a TC. Some one correct me if I'm wrong.  KN

DRY FIRING IS DEFINITLY NOT RECOMENDED ON THE ENCORE UNLESS YOU REMOVE THE FIRING PIN AND SPRING WHILE PLACING A RAG BETWEEN HAMMER AND RECIEVER.IF NOT REMOVED CAN DAMAGE FIRING PIN SPRING.YOU CAN READ ABOUT THIS TOPIC ON BELLM CD OF ENCORE DISASSEMBLY.

My 223 barrel does this if I don't lift the gun off the rest and snap it shut with both hands. It is an encore also. I was blaming the ammo but the lifting of the barrel seemed to eliminate it.

Cliffs, you shouldn't have to snap it shut that hard. It sounds like your not getting good engagement of the locking lugs.  KN

All I know is the muzzleloader barrel works fine and the 223 does also if I snap her shut good. The primer is not dented enough if I don't do this.

The light dent is the giveaway to your locking lug problems. There not pushing the hammer block far enough out of the way. You can stone the surface of the locking lugs to correct this. Or TC will probably send you some different ones.  KN

Stone the tapered area on the locking lugs so that they engage deeper into the action when its closed. I have never had to do this so I'm not sure I'm explaining it real good. When you close the action the lugs are pushed back into the barrel assembly as the barrel closes. When the barrel is completely closed the lugs engage into the frame pushing the hammer block out of the way. If the lugs dont go deep enough into the frame then the hammer block partially blocks the hammers fall and you get a light dent or no dent depending on how bad it is. Removing material fron the tapered part of the lugs lets them engage the frame farther, pushing the hammer block farther out of the way. I hope I have made some sense out if this.  KN

I had the 30-06 back out the other week. What I found was the rem cor-loc ammo was giving me a buch of missfires. The other ammo I tried worked fine.
