Herrett shooters - I need input...
« on: March 27, 2003, 04:31:02 AM »
Anyone handloading or have handloaded for the Herrett calibers, please help me make a decision, please.

I have been looking for a way to neck size only my 30-30 brass used for the 357 and 30 Herrett barrels. Up till now I've full length sized, then adjusted the die off the shoulder for handloading. I find this still works the case body. My question is, should I not worry about my current process, or will finding a way to neck size only help with brass life/accuracy? I'm not sure if the Herrett calibers are worth the extra effort or not.

I would personally go with the neck die after your first firing just to extend case life.  As much time as I invest in forming those cases, I sure like them to last as long as possible, might be more accurate too...

Yes, and thanks!! I'm just not convinced to make the move yet. I started questioning why none of the major die manufactures ever made one specifically for the Herretts. I'm thinking......maybe they know something I don't.

May be just not enough demand to make one for those specific calibers.  The Hornady one I mentioned will work with many cases of the same caliber, that is the tack that Hornady has taken on most of their neck-sizers.  Since many cartridges can fit it, it tends to be a matter of adjusting length, much lower manufacturing costs that way.

I stand corrected.......after a lengthy phone conversation w/ customer service at RCBS, I've found a neck sizer just for the Herrett. It's not listed in their catalog or on their site. Why? I asked......"not sure" they said. Learning experience #987,640,974,893,928: if you don't see it ask. the worst part is they offer it alone or in a set (with the seater die). Price: about what you pay for a Forster die.($76.00)-ouch!

TC/Nimrod,  I,ve used the Hornady short 30 neck die that Captainkirk refered to for many years....$20.00...don't know how that $76.00 die could do the job any better...my  FL and seater are RCBS and I've talked to them many times but I didn't know they had the neck die either.  I've always used the FL die on the 357, but I don't shoot it near as much as the 30 either.  I just back it off a few thousandths.   I wouldn't even hazzard a guess at how many times I,ve loaded my brass...always heard how weak that 30-30 brass is, but I just haven't seen it.

I load mine (30Herrett) using Bob Mileks old articles as reference. After forming, fire-forming, and shooting, I just back off the sizing die a little bit prior to re-sizing, just enough to keep the die off the shoulder. I have been doing this for many years and never had a problem and teh brass doesn't stretch at all. His old Shooting Times articles are priceless and can still be found. Do a search on google for his name. The articles will come up.
