100 yard test lets try it again

I got out yesterday to shoot my Muzzleloader. It is the one I wrote about before. It is a TC renegade with a Green Mountain LRH Stainless steel barrel. I was shooting Hornady 410 gr 50 cal. The sights are Lyman 57 peep and Lyman 17 globe.  Click on the links to see the pictures.

I held too high on this one but I was shooting for groups.  I held for center of the target. This group was 1.36" at 100 yards. It is a good group for open sights. Each group was three shots. This one had 90 gr of RS, a wind of about 5 MPH

This next one was with 100 gr of RS and my hold was at the 6:00 position. I loved this group, it is the best group I have ever shot with any gun.

This one was 110 gr of RS and my hold was still 6:00 on the target. This one was 2.5" I think i pulled this one but I was short of bullets and had one more group to shoot.

This last one is 110 gr of RS at 150 yards. I adjusted the sights to where I thought it would be and it was too high and almost missed. I was holding 6:00 position of the 8x11 paper. It hit 9"high. The group was as close as I could tell 4" at 150 yards.

 I took all three of the 100 yard targets and averaged the 9 shots at 1.42" at 100 yards. I am excited about this gun for a hunting rifle. With some luck I will be going after Deer, Elk, Pronghorn, and maybe a moose if my son draws.   Ron

I have got the same barrel on a TC Hawken stock.. and of course you know in Idaho that we can shoot sabots so I am shooting a 250 grain Speer Gold Dot pushed by 90 grains of T7-2f - that barrel is really accurate.  I do not have the peep sight set up you do I am using the fiber that came on the barrel and I have only shot it to 100 yards - it groups as well as I can shoot, actually as well as I can see...

Last week just for the heck of it I tried some 10mm 200 grain Hornady XTP's in a MMP sabot out of that barrel - what a dream - can not use them during ML season, but they certainly would be tough on coyotes.  Next time I am going to take the chrono and see what they are doing.

The hunts I am looking to get into are the Traditional hunts. Since they won't allow sabots on those hunts I had to find a conical that would shoot almost as well.  I think this gun shoots better than my knight inline.  Ron

We do not have any traditional hunts up this way, just a very short ML season, although I now hunt all seasons with a ML. The centerfires are all greased up and put away.

I guess I am somewhat surprised that fast twist LRH barrel will shoot conicals that well.  I guess I thought it might be to fas for them...

When they made the LRH the bullet they had in mind was either conicals or Sabots.  I have tried 460 gr bullets and did not have as much luch with them.   Ron

Is that barrel the 1 inch Long range Hunter? I believe Green Mountain offers different diameters and I was wondering what that one was.  Great groups and great looking rifle.

Yes mine is the one inch across the flats for the TC renegade. The hawkens should be 15/16's . One of the guys I work with has just finished a rifle like mine, based off a 45 cal TC Hawkens. He also got a 50 cal SS barrel and loves his. They clean up nice and shoot well. I was having hang fires on mine. I changed the nipple to a hot shot. I also quit spit patching between groups. This rifle like a brush down the bore after about 5 or 6 shots.  This barrel also did not like 777. After I went to pyrodex all was well. After I found out what made it tick it is not real picky.   Ron

I do not recal which T7 you were using but I gave up on 2f a couple of years ago in the sidelocks.  Hunting in December in really cold weather the 2f just would not always ignight.  Since switching to 3f and being able to get the powder out underneath the nipple has really made a difference.  I have not had any problems since the switch.

I tried both 3f and 2f in the 777. Both of them had the same problem with the bullets I was using. I was getting lead in the barrel bad. I could not shoot over 70 gr of 777 with a 460 gr white bullet. If I did the barrel was full of lead.  I got tired of trying to fuss with 777 to get extra FPS and went back to the pyrodex.  The white slug just didn't have the accuracy I needed so I tried the hornady. I think my rifle likes the shorter and lighter slug.   Ron

I shoot the silver ball myself.  I patch it and moose milk it and stuff it on top of 3f and kill things with it.  If I don't shoot the silver ball within a month or two, then I have to shoot the grey ball instead.

 the LRH barrels are all 1-28 twist.
After shooting this gun some more I am Very pleased with the GM barrel. I have added a Bushnell Legend range finder to the mix and it was what I needed to finish off the "far speaker". I have sighted the gun in all the way out to 300 yards. I have been practicing with my son. He picks the spot to shoot from and I range find it and set the sight and shoot. Pop bottles out to 150 are no big trick. Milk jugs out to 200 are also no big trick. I need some more calm days to really finish the sight in for shooting milk jugs out to 300 yards. I can hit 3 out of 5 at 300 yards.
 Things I have learned.
1- 777 is not the powder for me, and I will never uses it again.
2- GM produces a GREAT product. The only down side is everything on the barrel WILL get loose when shooting. Everything needs locktight to stay put.
3- GM's sights suck! Lyman 57 SML and the 17 AML with Lee Shaver inserts ROCK!!!
4- the range finder and movable sights make for a combonation that is very accurate.

Like I said I am very pleased with this barrel and sights.  Ron
