Newby here'bouts... Need info on sighting
« on: April 06, 2006, 04:40:30 PM »
Good evening to ya'll.  I'm new in these parts; and have a question regarding the H&R Buffalo Classic.
I just got my H&R Buffalo Classic today; and I'm a dinosaur and want to use the Williams receiver sight and Lyman target front sights (with those aperture inserts...
Any info regarding the techniques for first sighting in would be very much appreciated....
Also, any recommendation regarding the bullet weight/size, powder brand, etc would be appreciated since I'll be reloading....

Thanks for your help....

Because a Handi is a break action rifle, a receiver sight may not be a good of a choice.  When you close the action the barrel will end up in slightly different place each time.  It may not be much but it may be enough to cause a change in th POI.  When the front and rear sight are attached to two movable pieces is is not a good thing.  Larry

you have a choice of two rear sight;s for the buff, one is the william's fp sight $58.00 from h&r or the smith rear sight for $140 from buffalo arms.  the lyman globe sight that comes with the buff is to high at.584 you realy need the lyman ahb.404 it works beter with the two rear sight's that i have mentiond, here are some pics the top pic is the williams fp the bot pic is the smith buckhorn lader sight. both sight's are fitted to the top of the barrel where it is taped for the scope  mount.

Trotter, I'm not following your thinking on the receiver sights. Now if the front sight was attached to the barrel (that moves), and the rear sight was attached to the receiver which is stationary, I could see your point. But with both sight pieces are attached to the same rigid tube (the barrel), the relationship between them will not change no matter how loose the barrel is. (?)

AJ, you got tricked by the terminology just as I did on a previous thread, receiver sights mount to the frame as opposed to the WGRS and FP sights which mount on the barrel...

CAUTION WIL ROBINSON!!! The Smith ladder sight now comes with a notch slider, no peep slider!! I ordered one 2 months ago from Buffalo Arms after debating on ordering it for over a year due to my old eyes and not being able to use a notch sight, got it this week, it now comes with a notch slider, not a peep slider as stated on their web site, which they have now changed. I emailed Smith to ask if I can swap the slider, but they haven't responded yet. Buffalo Arms checked all they had in stock, every one has a notch. :(  So, if I can't get a peep slider, it's going back to Buffalo Arms.

Hey boy, how ya'll doin'? My grandad came from Oklahoma, so as my Dad and Mom.  GrandDad knew Will Rogers, shot trap, market hunted and fished on the Verdigris River in southeast Kansas and lived Talala, my Mom lived in Oolagah; and every year when I was a little boy we always vacationed on Oolagah Lake or Lake of the Cherokees; that's my claim to fame, and my hero is still Bud Wilkinson.
Now I got that out of the way, you're gonna' like the BC.  How do you want to shoot it? I just turned in a range report on it, do you want to shoot commercial ammunition or cast bullets, it does make a difference here. Okay?
Talk to me man, you're gonna' like it.
