Good article. Thanks. I used to use CCI also. Only have a few Large Rifle Magnums left. Small rifle primers I use Winchester, Remington 7 1/2, and Federal. They all have their place depending on the case and the powder.
I shoot a lot of silhouette. Once i work up to a load that will give me around an inch at 100 yards, I will try a different primer to see what happens to the group. Sometimes it is suprising to see the difference in velocity and accuracy by just changing the primer.
I have a DW revolver that loves 1680 powder and Rem 7 1/2 primers. My shooting buddy has same gun (1 serial number different) and had to use 2.0 grains more 1680 and Winchester primer to get similar velocity and accuracy.
I have an XP100 in 7TCU. At 100 yards H335 and Remington primers gave me a nice 1" group. I tried different primers. Federal gave me about a 1.5" group. Winchester gave me about .5" group.
You can go from mild to wild in smaller cases like the hornet, 30 carbine, etc, just by changing the primer.
I have several similar stories with Large Rifle primers also. They are not the same. If using near max loads, be careful if changing primers.
