I never had any consistent luck on cats until I tried fresh cutbait like all the bigshots preach.  I never have any luck with the stinkbaits sold  as catfish baits. I would be very interested too hear of others expleriences. Since I started using cut shad and other rough fish I have been able to pretty much catch catfish on purpose quite consistently.  I'm totaly sold on cut baitfish. But I want ot hear how others do it with commercial baits.

i use quic-hit stink bait. it has never had any real luck with cats but i was fishing on a trout farm that was stocked with hatchery fish and a i dropped a little of the dock and you could see a feeding a frenzy in the water below.

I don't know if you have big hard shelled land snails where you live, 2 inchs wide.  But down here they make great bait.  Just smash open the shell of the snail, stick a hook in the hard meat of the snail and throw it in the water with guts and all.

Another bait I have used for catfishing is I make a dry dough, reg. flour mixed with fresh fish blood and a little salt, works good, releases the blood little by little.  A small current in the water will attract catfish from far away.  But beware, if there are a lot of small fish where you are fishing, they will steal the bait.

Also if you catch some small Perch or other fish you don't plan on eating, cut up some bloody pieces of meat as bait, works good also.  It is hard for the small fish to steal this type of bait.

Bloody Chicken liver makes a good catfish bait too, but fresh Chicken liver tends to fall easily off the hook.  What I do is I give the Chicken liver a good coat of salt on both sides, then I dry the Chicken liver out in the hot Sun, half a day for one side, the other half of the day for the other side.  The salt perserves the liver and drying it out makes it gummy and it holds better on the hook.  Once salted and dried out in the sun, you can store them in a jar for future use.  Also drying them out makes it hard for small fish to steal the bait.

Take in mind that fresh blood always makes a good attracting smell for catfish, the amino acids in the blood actives their feeding habit, they can't resist the bait once they smell the blood/amino acids.   Most commercial catfish baits have blood in their recipe.

I experiment a lot over the years.  It all seems to work to varing degrees.  I now buy cheap Jack Makerel, real oily, and mix with flower and chicken gizzerds, minced up fish guts ect.  and salt.  Some use anaise or garlic also.  Wet cat food works, it is mostly fish meal.
this is for rod and real, for jugs or trot lines, use cut bait, crawfish.

It looks like this topic is pretty old, but its on the 1st page so I'm gonna post. I would have earlier but i havent been on here in awhile. I learnt about this homemade catfish bait from my friend. They use it when they go catfishing. They take chicken breast and cut it up into hook size pieces. Then they put it in a ziplock bag and put red kool-aid (i dont know what flavor, i guess any flavor as long as its red) in the bag and shake it up real good. (I dont know if they added any water) They they freeze it and its ready whenever you wanna go fishing. I have went fishing with them one time and we used this homemade bait, chicken livers, and nightcrawlers. The homemade bait caught the most fish by far. It may sound crazy but trust me it worked. By the way they used it in a river, not sure about ponds.

Chicken Gizzards and Hearts. Put in a big ziplock bag along with a bunch of, three times as much as you think you would use, garlic powder, powdered anise and salt. Let sit IN THE SUN for a couple of days. The hearts and gizzards stay on the hook much better than livers.
That being said, I always use freshly caught shad or skipjack if I can get them. I seem to catch more but smaller cats on the gizzards and the bigger cats on the cut bait.
