Author Topic: 32 Gauge H&R Rifle? (Read 1987 times)

I happened across one of these this morning. Apparently its a tranquilizer gun used by Animal Control authorities.

It was in real good shape and had very nice dark brown wood. The stock had the monte carlo hump. It had an elevator style rear sight. The frame was stamped H&R (spelled completely) and the serial number began with AT. Stamped on the barrel was "32 Gauge Special" and it was rilfled.

The receiver felt solid, heavier than an SB1. I thought perhaps it could be a candidate for a rebarrel, but a call to NEF quickly eliminated that idea. The helpful lady I spoke to confirmed that it was made during the old H&R days and the NEF wouldn't be able to do anything with it.

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what it may be usefull for? I really like the wood, but the $99 asking price is a bit high for a good looking set of pallet wood.

There is such a thing as a 32 gauge shotgun and yes ammo is available even if hard to find and expensive. It's not as uncommon in Europe as here so ammo is imported by a couple of folks. If it's chambered properly you might use it with shotgun ammo of that gauge. Otherwise hang it on the wall to look at.

Ballistic Products Inc in Corcoran MN has every thing to load 32 gauge. 1000 Fiocchi primed hulls for $79.50.

Loading data, wads and roll crimpers etc. This is a wonerful shotgun like the 28 gauge great for women and children and of course for big boys too.

For about 15k you can get a double gun custom made.

As the gentleman said on the reference post that Quick supplied, It would probably be a nice addition to the collection. Something unique and a little odd.

I referenced Cartridges of the World and read a little about the 32 Gauge shot shell. Interesting.

I would think it would need to be honed out to a smooth bore and have a choke added to make it a usable shotgun.
Why not check on 32ga brass cases and a mold in the correct size and make a big bore rifle of it?
32ga is about .525", should be some bullets available in ML stuff.
