What kind of varmint rig do YOU shoot?
« on: April 07, 2006, 04:36:04 PM »
I was just curious what you fellers shoot. I have several different rigs that I use, depending on conditions and what kind of critters I'm goin after. My latest edition is a Kimber 84 Classic Varmint in 204 with a Leupold VX-L in 4.5 X 14 with the varmint reticle. Goin out tomorrow for it's maiden voyage.
Perception is everything. For instance, a crowded elevator smells different to a midget.

NEF Handi Rifle .243 topped with a Swift Premier 4-12x40mm for coyote, bobcat, and fox.

Savage 93R17HMR topped with a Tasco Target/Varmint 10-40x50mm for crows, starling, and what other critters that should come my way. :D

Looks like you are pretty well fixed for some long range shooting, I wouldent doubt you might do some Sod Poddle shooting in your area.
How do you like the 18X50 Leupold scope, Been thinking about putting one on one of my heavy barreld rifles..........Joe..........

I like it alot.  The clarity is really good from about 10 meters out to infinity.  My Ruger is so heavy, I couldn't see putting a 3X9 or anything else on there to save weight.  This setup is a real tack driver with factory and handloads.  I am thinking about getting the setup in .204 Ruger to switch out guns on Sod poodle shoots.  My gun has the brown laminate stock and target gray metal...I saw a Ruger prototype that is the exact same gun as mine, but with the salt and pepper stock with Blued metal.  Those would be two SERIOUS sisters there wouldn't it?  Hah hah

My "reach out and touch them" rig is a rebarreled Savage 22-250 AI 4x12 Leupold VXII AO. My little rifle is a Contender carbine in .204 Ruger MGM stainless steel barrel w/Weaver K15 AO. Both do serious prairie dog work whenever called upon to do that. I have several other setups for 'walking rigs'.

it said rig no "s"on the end...gaaaads.the one I take most is my H&K 630 in .223, has the H&K detachable scope mount with a leupold Vari XIII 3.5x10 duplex matte on top.I figured out a way to use M16 mags in it so I can put 20/30 round mags in it if I want.but normally just use the H&K 10 round mags.if ya put a rigs one up there I can start my inventory here.he he he..
I think that rifle with it's muzzel brake/recoil arrestor what ever it is on the front combined with the caliber that it is in.is absolutly wonderfull.the follow up are second shot is right there the muzzle does not rise off the target."much".(lawyer made put that there as a .22RF rises a little.)
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

Bet thats a slick rig, Let us know how you made out with your outing. I have not had a chance to shoot the 204 yet. I did get to shoot a 19X223 rem. Super nice little rig. Have you tried James Calhoons bullets yet? I shoot a lot of them in my 17 rem and swear by them. Good luck :D  :D .......Joe.........

skb2706  My rig will have at least six guns in it plus cleaning Stuff. I have a shooting table that rotates 360 deg.s which is neat for an old man such as myself.( Question) Are you located on the east side of Colo ?
Me thinks there should be some good P-Dog shooting there. Used to see quite a few towns on the way to Scott City, ks. back in the 70s. Have shot many P-Dogs between Hugoton and Ulysses Kansas three years ago.
Have rig will travel :D ...........Joe...........

oso - I live in the Denver area but have a sister who farms just outside of Tribune KS. My brotherin law has set me up with several really nice places to shoot and by now I have been enough times that most of the locals kinda know me. Its kind of odd that CO chooses to protect their prairie dogs and KS forces farm owners to poison them.
Anytime you have the urge to make the drive and go bust up a few let me know.
I don't have a rotating table.........I have to get up and turn mine...lol

First off...We all hate u lucky !@$t@r$S....that live on the eastern slopes of the rockies & have great P-Dog shooting.[grin grin not really just envious]...My go to rifle has been a Winchester model 70 heavy barrel stealth in 22 -250 has a timney trigger & a fine 6.5 X 20 leupold scope..I finished a rem custom job late last season only got to use it a week in early october down in western Pa.A Hart rebarreled 6mmbr with a tight neck...That model 700 sets in a vintage restored 40X wood stock , has a custom trigger, 8X32 Nightforce $cope..it shoots the 87gr Hornady V-Max to an inch at 300meters.. my walking about varminter is an old sako 270 win. with 4.5 X 14 Burris..it shoots the 110 gr bullets into a nice cloverleaf at 100 yds...Lately I have been customizing Savage bolt actions..Started with a 35 Whelen..& An Adams & Bennett barrel...it shot as well as my Sako..That started it..now I'm playing around with those actions & rifle Basic sav-2 triggers..Got a couple of different projects going in all kinds of calibers 6.5 X 284 ....243 win...thumbhole stocks etc...The 243 is getting a muzzle brake...I want to see the hits...mike in ct

i just use my A-Bolt in .243 with a Bushnell Banner 3-9x40 scope.

I shoot 60 grain Sierra hollowpoints in it and so far I have not gotten a groundhog with it yet, just worked up the load this last week.

My rig is a Ruger 77 ultra light with Nikon fixed 4X in a .243.  This rifle likes 85gr sierra BTHP's.  No PD's around here so the barrel never gets hot.   Also use a Savage 93R17 BVSS .17HMR with a Bushnell Elite 4200 4X16 and shoot 17 grain Horndy V-Max through it.

Just got in from my 2nd day of re-arranging a bunch of prarie dog's body shapes. Am VERY happy with the 204. The Kimber Classic Varmint did JUST FINE and I am also pleased with the new Leupold VX-L. I went thru about 400 rounds in two days and didn't miss too many of those. Was really windy today but the 204 did very well bucking it. I think it just gets there before the wind knows it's out there. I was shooting Hornady factory 32 grainers but now I have some brass to start working up a load. Good shootin' !

Dogshooter  Good choice in rifles and cal. Don't have a 204 yet but will have one soon. This combo should make you a fine Varmint rig with the Leupold scope you can't go wrong. Good luck :D .........Joe........

« Reply #25 on: April 14, 2006, 04:29:07 PM »
...but we have plenty of groundhogs.

I don't have a dedicated varmint rig but I'll use anything I have.

That would include:

16" Bushy A2 16" HBAR w/open sights  :-)

Mosin-Nagants (M44 or ex-Dragoon) with light ball ammo

NEF Pardner Youth .410 with slugs  :o

Ruger SP101 for when they gang up on me trying to steal my wallet.  :-D

The old Daisy pump-action pellet/BB gun even sees usage at age 21+, more of a crow gun though. Just ticks off the groundhogs...

Lotsa doves met their demise to that little gun though. Gotta sneak up like a bowhunter to get 'em, but they aren't exactly wiley critters.  :)

Strange how the laguage of predator callers has changed. Where I'm from ( not NM ) a varmint rig is the truck you hunt from.
We always asked what do you shoot or what caliber are you shooting when talking about a rifle.
