243 opening after shot?
« on: April 08, 2006, 12:09:07 PM »
Ok I got a new NEF handi in 243 Remington.

On SOME ammo it shoots just fine.

On OTHER ammo after the shot, I find the breach is opened already with no help from me.

anyone else have this problem?

could it be the ammo? or am I possibly knocking something (like the open lever) during the recoil?

suggestions?

IF it did it all the time I would have worries, but it only does it some of the time, seems when ever I am using some stout loads.

Pop opens are caused by inadequate lock up, you can check the latch engagement, instructions are in the FAQ under barrel fitting.

Make sure the underside of the barrel is clean and free of any debris that might prevent the barrel from seating in the frame properly.

Also, make sure there is no oil on the latch or latch shelf, they should be clean and dry.

Check to make sure the loaded round is fully chambered and not preventing the action from closing all the way, this could be caused by insufficient headspace due to improperly sized brass or a dirty chamber.

Also, you do not have to slam the gun to lock, but it should come together with a firm and definate click, a half hearted closing has resulted in an automatic open for me on more than one occasion. 8)

The new extractor barreled Handi's don't "click" on closing anymore..it's quite disconcerning for me...something I-we will have to get use too  The shells do click when you push them in and the extractor pushes up into the rim though...just not when you close them...

Like Quick said..make sure it doesn't have any oil on the latch or shelf..and the chamber is clean..These are the 2 biggest causes of this..

There are 2 barrel fitting links in the FAQ and Help sticky just above this.
