700 SPS range report
« on: April 08, 2006, 03:06:19 PM »
I am very pleased with my 700 SPS in .223. the second time at the range with some preliminary handloads. Barnes 50 gr. Varminator over H335 shot 10 rounds into 1.1 inches. Speer TNT and H335 shot 7 rounds into .9 inches. I wish I hand taken more loads with me. I can't believe I have spent almost a year trying to get 3 shot groups that size from an H&R Ultra Varmint and didn't succeed. I never should have left Remington but at least I'm back home again. The next time the H&R leaves the safe will be when I sell it.

That's great to hear. And the best part is, is that the SPS is considered to be the "toy gun" of the 700's (the synthetic stock and all that jazz). Cool, good luck with it!  :D

Thanks for the review hvacman. My cousin wants one and this review might help nudge him along  :)

Yep I finally had it with my ultra and just bought a 700 that has been trued and rebarreled to a 260. I have spent way to much time with that H&R only to find out it made a good receiver for a custom .45 caliber muzzleloader.

Thanks for the report:
I am debating at this very minute to order an SPS .223
Did you get the matte finish or SS
Too funny, I went through the Ultra thing to
Sold it, didn't need the frustration anymore. My Mini-14 will out shoot it every time.
Try some 40 Vmax over H-335 and some 55 V-Max over a stout load of Varget, best loads I have shot in any .223
Failure is not an option

I got the matte finish. Something about a gun so ugly that I don't care much if I scratch it
