Anyone built a bolt action version of a 10/22 Ultimate?
« on: April 09, 2006, 04:22:20 AM »
I've been nosing around RimFireCentral.com and similar sites and am really impressed buy the 10/22 Ultimates they build, particularly those built on the do-it-yourself "Polar Bear" benchrest design created by one of the members.
For this stock the basic inletting on the original stock is used and extra wood glued on and putty applied so it can be scuplted into larger target design.
Most people have then added an impressive paint job for effect.
Here's an example:

My problem is this..........here in Australia only rural producers and professional feral animal eradicators are permitted to own and use semi-auto rimfires like the 10/22.
But due to recent developments at my local range I'd really like to have a rimfire bench rifle that can shoot well.
Unfortunately I don't have the dollars for a really good Walther, Martini or Anschütz target rifle or even for one of the recently produced varmint rifles made by a number of firms.
However, I could probably afford to get a decent little Anschütz Model 1389 or Model 1400 rifle which are technically light hunting rifles but have good actions and barrels and with bedding and trigger work can shoot very accurately.
This would be a good basis for a basic bench rest rifle, at least the for sort of shooter I'm after.
Has anyone else done this sort of project?

CZs and older Brno Model 2s are great rifles and as a result they too command at least AUD$500 on the 2nd hand market.
I already own a Anschütz Model 1400.
It's a light .22lr 10 shot repeater designed as a beginner's rifle but it's surprisingly accurate, hence my feeling that one of these or the single shot version, the Model 1389, would make a good basic bench rifle with the right sort of stock and tweaking.
Of course a Anschütz Model 54 barreled action would be ideal but the likelihood of obtaining one with my budgetry restraints is low.
If I REALLY wanted to go cheap I could simply get another stock of a benchrest style design and a bigger scope and just swap the barrelled action and from my Mod 1400 over and change scopes depending on what I was shooting.
I suspect however that it wouldn't be great for the bedding long term and it would be easier not to have to be continually swapping over as it takes some of the variables out of possible inaccuracies.

I remember a few threads on Rimfire Central about folks there building up 77/22's as "ultimates".  Maybe a search there...

If Savage rifles are available there, you might look into them. I just bought one for about $200 US. It's easily as accurate out of the box as my highly customized 10/22 "ultimate." The stock is horrid and I'm replacing it with a Richard's Microfit, but other than a little smoothing of action and trigger parts, that's all it needs. That's the best bang for the buck that I've ever found. I bought the MK II FV, .22 LR heavy barrel with polymer stock.
