Don't know that I can answer your question other than what I have seen in the past.  22 shorts were traditionally used in carnival galleries with autoloaders (tube feeds).  They are cheap, relatively quiet, and for indoor 50 foot ranges will do the job for target shooting and plinking.
Yes, a 22 long rifle will do the same job, depending on who asks.  Now, Is there a reason for 22 longs to exist???  That's the question.

A surprisingly large number of standard velocity 22 shorts are used for international rapid fire pistol events. Some people prefer high velocity shorts for squirrel hunting, claiming the are better than long rifles. Longs are still available, but in very few variations. I think only one or two US manufacturers make a small amount of them per year.

I like shorts, CCI HP's in particular, for squirrel hunting if I'm using a rifle.

Basically you get plenty enough power for squirrels, rabbits, and such at ranges these critters are normally shot, but the ammo doesn't have the range that long rifles do. That can be a plus when hunting small woodlots, or in areas that are populated.

If you want to eat something small, with minimum damage, they are a good choice.  I used to hunt with them all the time out of my rem 572 tube fed.

Well kind of. If you want a very quiet 22 caliber fire arm to eliminate any pesky in town critters, then a 22 short is the ticket.

Even if all you want to do is kill rabbits in the garden, I'd pull out 22 shorts in an instant. They work great in tube feed lever guns and pump action rifles. They aren't to good at feeding through semi automatics.

When I was a kid I could buy many more "shorts" than I could "long rifles".

I guess I forgot to say, when shooting them from my semi pistol, I pretty much single load and fire them. They hit much harder than a 177 bb gun.

When I was a kid, I bought them because they were cheaper!  55 cts for a box of shorts when long rifles cost 70 cts.  Now long rifles are cheaper than anything else.  Mass production benifits.  44 Man

:cb2: Wasn't that great when we were kids and could go buy a box of .22 LR at the 7/11 for 50ยข a box! You could also walk down the street with your rifle or shotgun, and the police wouldn't give it a second thought.
