LAB PUP UPDATE
« on: March 27, 2003, 12:59:23 PM »
Just thought an update was due. My chocolate male is now 12 weeks old. He's a clumsy, funny and excitable little moose at this stage. He has doubled in size( at least ) in the last 6 weeks.House training was not a big deal, couple of piddles, but a few whacks with a newspaper and he got the idea. he has been assigned two things that are ok to chew on and so far has not offered to chew up anything else.
He is heeling well on lead, sits when I stop and on command with both voice and whistle, comes readily to both. Thinks retrieving his dummy is the greatest game in the world. I think he's doing very well for his age.
Let me say that at this point everything is being done as play, not a lot of correction or scolding. If he breaks his sit when I've asked him to stay, I just take right back to the same spot and do it again, he's getting it. I'm just now starting to hold him back for a few seconds when I ask him to retrieve, the time will increase over the next couple of weeks, then we'll take a big step and try a double. It's been cold here so I haven't had a chance to get him in water yet, but its coming in the very near future.
Haven't as yet introduced him to a real bird, I'm thinking that at about 14-16 weeks, everything going ok I'll let him bump a pidgeon or two. Any thoughts on this from you guys?
Anyway I'm really pleased with his progress, and his personality is a hoot.If anyone has any suggestions, cautions, or input please feel free, and how about some updates on some of the other pups out there. Tx

Sounds like you and your pup is coming along quite well.  The only caution I have is that when you have a willing pup such as yours it is easy to try and teach him to much too soon and overload him.

Here is a "Stay" tip.
I always had trouble making my dogs stay while I left them, such as to sneek up on ducks. Then I learned this simple trick.  Untill a dog is several years old never call him off of a "stay".

Telling him to "come" while at a "stay" makes him nervous about staying there. He is always afraid he has missed your comand and will bolt during excitment such as shooting.  If he knows you will come back and get him after telling him to stay he will stay there relaxed forever as he does not expect to get called away by you.

That trick and teaching a wet dog to shake his coat before approaching you and teaching them to pee on comand makes for a great hunting companion.
"Friend, I would not hurt thee for the world; but you are standing where I am about to shoot."
