Has anyone rechambered a 30-30 Handi rifle to 30-40 Krag. The handi should handle that caliber and its one I always liked'
shot placement is everything.

Yep, got it back about two weeks ago. Handles both Winchester and Remington 180 gr factory loads, and my favorite handload just great. All will go into 1.5 in @ 100. But I never doubted it would work. This is my third such rechamber in H&R/NEF rifles and I also did a Savage 219 years ago. It's a very straight-forward rechamber. No more complicated then a Hornet to K-Hornet, since all headspacing is on the rim. Could have just easily gone to 30-40 AI or 30-30 AI, again since all headspacing is on a rim. Go for it!

Sounds good to me. Who did the work for you?  I wonder if they will handle the old origianl 220 grain load.
shot placement is everything.

I have not tried anything heavier then the factory 180s, and my handload is a 165 Hornady SST. But, since the original 30-40 chamber dimensions allowed for the 220 gr round nose, and and the original 30-30 barrels were the same 1 in 10 twist, they should work great with the 220s. Later this summer I hope to get to try some heavy cast in this one. I looked for some time for one of the earier SB2s, with the cut riflings just to use with cast.

I can highly recommend the shop that did this one. Capital Sports, Helena, MT, 406/443-2978. They charged $100.00.

They also have 303 British reamers, so I'm watching for a used 7.62x39. On that one I will need to change the extractor for the rimmed case.

mt 3030.

Have you discussed with your gunsmith the type of extracter he will use on the .303 converstion?

Will it be one from the .30-30?

I am interested in having a .303 Handi as well and would probably ask your gunsmith to do the job, given that you're pleased with his work.

There is a project on-going at the Yahoo NEF group to ream a bunch of .30-30 barrels to .30-40 Krag:

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/nef-singleshot/message/16653

I believe that enough people have sent in their deposits that he is getting the reamer.  First run is $50 per barrel, then it will be $65 later.

EVOC ONE:

Sorry, missed your question about the extractor. No, have not discussed this issue yet. Neither of us have yet seen the extractor that is used on the newer Handis. Will have to have one in my hands for an examination before guessing how or what needs to be changed for a rimmed case. maybe another board member can answer that question for both of us.
