Scope Advice For My '95GS
« on: April 10, 2006, 09:28:30 PM »
Well, I've been reading up on the numerous scopes offered and favored by the '95GS owners. All I've accomplished is to confuse myself.

We've loaded the 45-70s from 'mild to wild' and really enjoy shooting all the flavors in the GS and our Cowboy!

Now it's time to scope it - my old eyes aren't what they used to be - and I'd like a few questions answered.

I have a quick detach scope mount on my Ruger MkIII Hunter - anything like that for the GS?

Also, I'd like a high mount that would allow me to use the iron sights OR could I use a Ghost Sight arrangement UNDER the scope? I'm not clear
on that.

The barrel is NOT ported but will be using some occasional stiff loads - how do scopes hold up under that kind of pounding on a big bore like the GS?

I'd appreciate any other pointers/suggestions that you may have.

Thanks, in advance.

I have never been able to make the peek through mounts work worth a darn.  If they are high enough to really give you access to the iron sights the scope is way to high to get consistent position with your cheek on the stock, so shots are frequently missed due to paralax problems.  And the channed you need to look through to use the iron sights restricts vision so that is a compromise as well.

My recommendation is pick either iron sights or a scope, and stick with it.  Use the appropriate height rings to position the scope properly for you so you can get a good cheek weld each time you mount the gun.

I am to just about all scopes now.  I still have a couple guns without, but they don't get used much.  Old eyes here too!

Good luck with your decision.

Warne Maxima bases and QD rings allow scope removal and replacement with return to POI. The bases are low enough that you can use the open sights with the scope removed. If keeping the rig in the silver is important to you, the Warne Maxima bases and QD rings come in silver and Leupold makes the VX-II 3-9x40mm or VX-III 2.5-8x36mm in silver. The XS Sight Systems scout mount (only in matte) works well with the Warne Maxima QD rings and the Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm scout scope comes in silver. Otherwise, I don't mind the look of matte mounts and scopes on stainless rifles. The Leupold VX-II 1-4x20mm is hard to beat on a 45-70.

What do you think of this? It's an answer from another forum.
