Unusual Howl

I recorded this unusual howl the other night in Central Illinois. I wondered what you guys thought about what kind of animal it is. I have had people tell me coyote, fox, or wolf but it doesn't sound like a coyote to me.

That is a sound i have never heard before, This may sound strange but it has a human quality to it, I don't think for a minute that it is animal. Don't tell me Bigfoot is on the loose in Illinois. But being serious it sounds to me like a human. Is there more to this story than you are telling us ? I'am up for anything :D ..........Joe............

Joe,

I came here for honest answers and opinions from folks who are out in the woods a lot and hear animal sounds.

I did not want to give my opinion and open a can of worms.  You can not prove the existence of an animal by a vocalization.  The real value of this sound clip is its use in luring in an animal for getting a picture.

I have heard all of the vocalizations and make my own but this sound had more human quality to it.

Hmmmm....after enhancing it and talking with a group on another site.we believe the Chupa Cabra has traveled north from mexico.is there a lot of goats in the area.I would not travel at night with out some garlic in my pocket.

it sounds pretyy high pitched to be a human.  my vote was for a wolf.  wolfs get that eary sound at the end and that sound at that quality at the end.  but the first part of the sound didnt exactly sound like any wolf i have heard, but i would say it is probably a wolf

Yes, we do have mountain lions.  My wife saw one in the daylight at a small bridge by our house.  I don't think this sounds feline.

My sister has a female Malamute that will absolutely make your
skin crawl when it starts howling....
That sounds like her dog.
It seems to be getting some echo effect going too..

I say Malamute as well.
 A red stag can sound similar but this has a dog like sound to it.

I guess I am listening to what I am supposed to.
But, the sound I hear is one that I hear almost every day at night.and that is the sound of a coyote/coyotes chatting with one another..unless there is some other sound I am not picking up amongst the coyotes chatting..

I hear coyotes every night, and I record them all the time. Sometimes close and sometimes far away.  

This howl does not sound like it is of the canine family to me.  I have not heard any recordings that sound like this one. But everyone hears things differently.

This animal came through on three different nights and I recorded it each time.  Last spring I heard a sound that resembled a roar at the same location (unrecorded).   The sound was one of the loudest I have ever heard.  It appeared to be coming from a huge chest.  

This sound file has been posted on several other forums and I have received probably 200 responses and emails.  The answers have been wide and varied.

If I posted a standard coyote howl 99% of the readers would immediately say coyote.  Same goes for a wolf or dog.  This is different with many different responses.  

I record every night for about 10 hrs.  I have fox, coyote, mountain lions and bobcat on this creek. There are a lot of different sounds and I will eventually get more from this same animal.

What is curious is that my dog barks at the coyotes but howls when this animal come through.

That is not a scary howl...coyote or coy-dog....Just horny...U want to hear Scary??? somebody is killing a baby kinda scary??? screamingfreaky kinda scary...Go up in the big north woods & listen to a Fischer cat call his mate...That makes my skin crawl...mike in ct

well,I played it several times.the 1st thing that came to mind was a bull or cow.(cattle)are they in the area??
another scary sound at night(heck, even during day light..) is the howler monkey.if you do not know what it is, and are camped in the jungle and one of them light up..you will vacate the area mucho quick.

Oh have you looked for tracks??if this is taking place by creek beds..there must be soft dirt and mudd.even strange scatt in the area might give a clue.

sound like cattle.but there is one part to it that sure does not sound like cattle.and the coyotes are resopnding to it..I really do not know what is making the noise.

From central illinois also and I'm thinking A Coy dog. I mistook a coyote for a deer 2 years ago. shot it the next week and it wieghed 68 lbs. I think there breeding with strays. (plenty of them in the country with people dropping them off all the time). Does have a pretty deep howl. maybe just a big male.
