Hi Which is more accurate in a light wind when shooting in a open pasture at praire dogs? The faster or a heavier bullet? Or is it a toss up? Les

I'm guessing its kind of a toss up. You could run it through a balistics program and see how it comes out.   KN

At 200 yds the 17 HMR 17 Gr V-Max MV of 2550 ft/sec  has about 7 inches drift in a 10 MPH cross wind while a 40 Gr V-Max .224 dia. MV of 2920 ft/sec will have about 6 inches wind drift. The Hornet will also have less bullet drop.

I have 2 of each and my hornet is my favorite by far. the only reason I still shoot the hmr is when I dont want to reload. Shoot a P dog at 150 with a hmr and it just dies with a hornet you'll lift it off the ground. At 200 you likely wont hit it with the HMR. Thats how it works for me anyway. If you dont reload dont get a hornet, mine wont shoot well with any factory ammo Ive tried.  If your undecided buy both and shoot alot I'm sure you'll have a blast.
