.204 Savage, Choate stock, Muller 8x25x40 dot, Basix trigger squirrels to 385 yds. (so far)

.17 HMR Contendern23" bull barrel, 6x18 Leupold fine x hairs squirrels to 125 yds. ( the .204 takes over from there)

.223 Contender 23" bull barrel, Leupold 3x9x40 yotes and squirrels to 250 yds.

The .204 now has a Leupold 8x25 and my PB on squirrels was 3 for 3 @430 yds.

I've only recently taken up coyote hunting and I use the same gear as I do for everything else this side of Africa... my 1954 Model 70 in .300 Weatherby Magnum. Dropped one a few weeks ago at just over 700 paces. I can't praise the Swarovski optics enough.

I always use what I got in my hand. The only thing that didn't work was a Ruger Mk I. We were rabbit hunting in tall grass when the yote almost ran over me. At ten feet and broad side, I could see tufs of hair flying with every shot but it didn't even slow him down. The beagles trailed him to a thicket but came back and decided they weren't the least bit interested in following a wounded coyote.

Too many according to my wife...A little 222 winchester sporter w/a simmons 4 X 12 cool reticle...An old rem 700 bdl varmint 222 w a leupold 6.5 X 20...a made from spare parts thumbhole sporter Savage 22-250 SAV-2 trigger trusty old BSA 6.5 X 24 AO scope....Win model 70 heavy barrel varmint 22-250 w/ 6.5 X 20 Leupold...Rem 700 adl in a restored 40x wood stock in 6MMBR timney trigger/hart barrel w/a nightforce 8 X 32 ...my old sako 270 win sporter w/4.5 x 14 burris great walking around rifle when loaded w 110 gr Sierra bullets..I'm working on two Savage actions..[waiting on barrels/with muzzle brakes] a 22-250 I may open up to to an Ackley Improved...the other is an Adams & Bennett bargain 243 winchester...Got a cool Boyd's thumbhole laminate varmint stock for that bad boy...My sako 223 model 75 SS varmint is in pieces I'm waiting on a custom 5MM barrel to convert that to a TAC 20..My hunting buddy in Pa took his 6.5 X 284 w burris blk diamond 8 x 32 scope...I miss that gun it was a fun project to put together...All bargain parts scrounged up from all over the country...Started with a stevens 308 sporter...Got a Savage laminate varmint stock from dave in Pa... pac-nor barrel & brass & dies from a real good high power shooter down south ....added a SAV-2 trigger & recoil reducer from Brownells...Warne steel bases & vertical split rings to hold that big heavy burris scope...It can shoot to an inch at 300 meters..pretty good for a spare parts gun that cost less than 600 bucks to put together...Next year I want to do a Striker hunting handgun in 6MMBR

have several more but these are the one that seem to always go in the jeep.
When hunting prarie rats we usually take several rifles. When hunting coyotes the 22-243 and the bushmaster are the favorit choises my son will use one and I the other. The 223 for 200yd. and closer the 22-243 for the longer shots or thats what are plan is when we go sometimes the dogs dont let it work out that way.

good thing about varmint hunting is you can use pretty much any gun you have. so

custom savage 30-06 for long range chucks and yotes
stevens 200 .223 all around good varmint rifle
H&R .223 bull barrel-long range chucks and yotes
charles daly 12ga semi-running yotes with hounds and high grass chucks.

Anything bigger I consider more of a biggame rifle and don't take varmint hunting specifically, but I will certainly use whatever I have with me when a target presents itself.

I'll be hunting coyotes for the first time this year. I have two friends that hunt them all the time and they've been asking me to go for the last few years. This year I'm definitely going.

I'll use either my Remington model 700 BDL 223 Rem w/ a 3-10x44mm Simmons scope on it, going to be replaced by a Leupold VX-II 4-12x40mm or 6-18x40mm scope. Or my Rock River Arms AR-15 for close range work. Right now the AR doesn't has an optic. It only has the factory iron/peep sights that are in the A2 carry handle receiver. I'm going to replace the A2 carry handle receiver with an A4 flat top receiver so I can mount an EOTech optic on it.
