new Handi 44 mag.
« on: April 12, 2006, 01:43:02 PM »
 I picked up my new handi SB2 in 44 mag. this afternoon. Went home and installed scope because my eyes have issues. I did the standard 1 shot & clean then 5 & clean. Last 5 shot group was 1 1/4" @ 50 yards with three of the five touching. I used Winchester 240 jsp's Hunters and I gotta say I enjoyed this rifle.
I shoot a lot of cast losds and will be with this rifle as soon as it breaks in a lettle more ( 200-300) of copper clad and frequent cleaning (works for me) I'am thinking of calling her Buckie, and can't wait to get her sister barrel in 38-55.
PS: Yes it slugs @ .432 but this barrel has some of the best defined rifling I've seen in a handi. The slugs dug out of clean sand had wxpanded 200%+ and the grooves were clean & sharp.
FYI, Trigger pull 3.6 lb. @ start and 3.2 after 30 rounds
if its worth doing, finish it!

Sounds like your on your way to a good shooter. And you are well prepared with casts and have a difinate slug diameter. The 44Mag is very fun round in a small rifle. It's just unfortunate that NEFs are notorius for over sizing, makes for a lot of frusteration for the average Joe shooting factory fodder.
Keep it up :toast:

You are evidently a lucky fellow.  Mine, also .432 doesn’t like most factory loads at all.  After a lot of experimenting with different loads and different size bullets I have had reasonable accuracy with .431 Laser cast and light powder loads.  These are fun to shoot at paper but probably not something I would take deer hunting.  I really like my .44 barrel I just wish it wasn’t so picky as to what it wants to shoot.

If you are interested in a 44 Mag with cut rifling, watch for one of the old H&R Toppers or an early SB2. They had cut rifling, properly sized bores and shot very well.

My 44 is the least accurate of my Handi's, but does shoot cast bullets better than jacketed...............
