5 inch 460 is a shooter
« on: April 13, 2006, 09:53:25 AM »
I shot my 5 inch S&W460 today. I shot 120 rounds and it was a blast, I installed an end cap where the compensator is. It is not bad at all without the compensator. At 25 yards I got a one inch group at 50 yards I got a 1.5 inch group. with a red-dot sight. I was trying 3 different loads. I don't think this is bad with an actual 4 inch barrel. All my shooting was with reloads, 240,260 and 300 gr. bullets.  I am very impressed with my little 5 inch 460 mag.  :-D  :D

Ya, if you have any pictures email them to me and I'll get them posted for you.  I'd like to see that little baby myself.  If you don't have any pics just send the gun to me for the summer and I'll see if I can get any good pictures of it.   :-D  :D

I'll need some loading dies and brass too. (For the picture of course)

I am using an Ultra-dot. It is the Match-dot. I have been using Ultra-dot sights on my big boomers for a while. I started using them on my 44 Mags, then my 500 Mags and now my 460's.  :D

:D

Today I had my hands wrapped all around the 460 12" model, slobberin' all over it until the proprietor told me I was gonna have to buy it if I didn't quit squeezin it that way. I have no practical use for it but I would LOVE to have this cannon. I wonder what would happen if I brought that home and showed it to my spouse. Probably have to post lookin' for a place to live.

Redhawk1, do you have any idea if they plan to make a 5" .500?  I might not be able to resist that one!  I think the 5" are the best "looking" yet.  Thanks.  Great shooting by the way!

I have not heard any thing about a 5 inch 500 Mag, but they do have a 6.5 inch if you can find one.  :D

Redhawk1, is this 6 1/2" a Performance Center model, or a regular item?  I can't find it on Smiths regular site.  Also, I note that you regularly scope your guns, do you use the Smith factory base, or something else?  I know you mention the Ultra-Dot.  I gather it's your favorite, but who makes it and why do you like it?  Thanks!

WNY_Whitetailer, thanks for the quick reply.  Thats a pretty good looking gun, except for the compensator. Any idea if it's removeable?  Thanks.

The comp is not removable on the performance center guns. I was away to West Virginia looking at the land I am getting ready to settle on, so sorry I did not got back to you sooner.
Ultra-dot is made by Ultra-dot. I like them because they are the red-dot that has been able to stand up to the recoil of the 500 Mag with not problems. I have tried the Tasco Pro-point, Leupold Gilmore, Aim- point and Millet and I only had good success with the Ultra-dot. I like the Match-dot from Ultra-dot the best.  Here is the site for them. http://www.ultradotwest.com/

As for the base for the red-dot I use the Smith factory base on my performance center guns and on my non-performance center guns I am able to get away with the Weaver mount, because of the light weight red-dots.  :D

      I do I do .
Still have not nailed down a great load for it yet . I still have a lot of load development to do but I find myself doing more casting and shipping than shooting lately  >:( Which is not a bad thing at all just does not leave a lot of time to get loads worked out .
I have a upcoming Caribou trip that I will be using the 460 on and my compound bow so I need to get on the stick and work some loads out .

Hope you get you 460 and 500 soon. The 460 has a lot less recoil an easy on the hands.  ;D

The end cap I talk about replaces the removable compensator. It is like shooting an un-comped gun. Less noise and flash, great for hunting. Here is the S&W web site where it is at.
