357 vs 44 mag?
« on: April 13, 2006, 10:21:06 PM »
I understand from my reading here that the 44's suffer from an oversize bore condition.

Is this true of the 357's too? I haven't seen any reference to it in this caliber (?)

I have a 357 & had a 44 Barrels the 44 was over size.
357 is fine, I reamed it to 357 Maxmum, works great,
I think it has better accur with 38 spl and 357 mag after
reaming. just my 2 cents Marv.

I have a .44 that is over sized and it has taken a lot of tinkering with powder and shot to get it to shoot reasonably well.  Actually the search for that load has been interesting and quite enjoyable.  I have learned quite a few things.  Others claim to have barrels that shoot .429 factory loads well.  My 357 is an 1894 so I can’t help you there.  I seem to remember some sort of problem concerning too long throat, maybe on the .357 Handi??  You might want to run a search on past postings or someone with a better memory might help you.

I have a .357 mag and don't load.

At 50 yds I can shoot 1.25" groups all day with factory ammo.  Mine seems to like the UMC.  Imagine that.  A Handi that likes cheap factory ammo.  I didn't know they existed before this one.

The .357 is a blast.  Can't speak for the .44

Over the years I've owned two of each. Both 357s would shoot rings around the 44s. This was before I was aware of the over-sized bores common to the SB2 44s. The best shooter was an H&R Topper 357 I owned between 1970-72. These rifles all had cut riflings and all shoot very well. (Wish I still had it!)
