Do any of you actually hunt with a semi ?
« on: April 14, 2006, 02:01:47 PM »
fify years ago an oldc time tolde me the reasons he used one. Being a young whipper-snapper and knowing everything. I dismassed them. now 67 years later I begin more and more reaching for my semi for deer hunting. I finally realized the wisdom of his ways. But deer hunting was a lot different in the 50"s

Does a pump 30-06 count?  Almost a semi-auto just about as fast.

I took one deer at about 65yds with a Ruger 44mag semi and a buck 2 yrs ago with a Remington 7400 308. Excellent reliable rifles both. What I really like about the 7400 is A)the detachable magazine is good when you have to load and reload getting in and out of treestands and vehicles B)lesser felt recoil C)pointability, feels like my 870 shotgun to me, For  a deer bear, boar rifle I'd be happy the rest of my life with one in 308, 06 or 35 Whelen. If you reload be sure to full length resize and keep to aroung factory velocities.

I’ve taken deer with both my old 30-06 742 and my .44 Deerfield.  #1 daughter has taken over the 742 and until she shot my 1894C 357 my wife claimed the Deerfield.  At least I have the use of on of them back now.

Of my hunting party one guy uses a Rem 742, 30-06, another a BAR 308 and last a Winchester, I think model 100,308. Accuracy is never a issue, all shots are under 100yds, never remember a reliability problem. Fast repeat shots are sometimes a necessaty due to running shots or downing shots. They always use factory ammo.

I have taken deer with a BAR 300 mag, Ruger Deerfield 44 mag, Springfield M1A 308. The M1A is my favorite and will continue to use it exclusively and hopefully with great success.

Hunted with a 742 for 20 years. Killed 12 bucks and a couple dozen does with it before it wore out. Traded it in during the Remington trade in program for a 7400 and killed a couple of does and and pig with the 7400. Then you guys got me on the 7600's. MIKE.

I've taken several deer with the AR in 223
« Reply #8 on: April 16, 2006, 04:58:19 PM »
and have seen several others that fell to same. It works about like the 30-30, to the same ranges, as long as you use good softpoints and avoid shots from rear angles.  Far more shooting is done at small game and varmints than at deer (much less elk, moose or bears). So the .22lr conversion in the AR, or the 223, see a lot more use than other calibers/guns.  I also train-compete with the AR, so I value the fast handling and all the practice when I hunt, too.

I've been using pumps and levers for all of my hunting over the past 10-15 years, however, an auto is still my preferred tool for hunting deer.  I have a BAR in .308 that I expect will find its way into the deer bush this fall.

You know, I've heard that some people actually use bolt actions for hunting.  No, I'm not putting you on, I've heard its really true.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!

The autoloaders, specifically the AR, can be used for much more interesting combat rifle matches, as well as for deer, small game (with the .22lr conversion unit) varmints, and are fine for shtf and defense. The bolt actions don't qualify for much of that usage.

Last year i picked up a savage 99 in 308 ,i plan do use this as my new backup rifle and next fall i am going back semi auto as i am getting one of the new remington 750 remington woodmasters  in 35 Whelen For those of you who have been thinking about tring semi autos you owe it to yourself to handle one of these new remington at your local shop, i just fell in love with the rifle . Some years back i thought i`d try a semi so i picked up a Win 100
    in .308.
Used it for 3 years and got rid of it........to heavy for me.
Now i`m back where i started, well almost.  Now when i`m in the woods
i`ve got a Sav 99 in .300, great balance, light to carry and even better
to shoot.  There is something about a lever .............if it`s a Savage
     that is. :D

Just got back today from a hunt in the Texas hill country.  Built an AR in 300-221 (AKA 300 whisper) for my daughter last year, she did not shoot it, and I have been using it ever since.  Shot four deer with it last season.  I shot two pigs and one sheep with it this trip.   First pig was about 15 pounds.  Nest shot the sheep at a little over 150 yards, heart shot, walked about 20 feet, was dead by the time I got to it.  Yesterday evening shot a pig about 70 pounds.  Aside from the sheep, everything has dropped where shot.  It is very accurate, and needs to be with the low power cartridge.  It is a pleasure to shoot.  Have not had to use the semi auto part of the gun yet.  I was hoping to get a second shot at another pig, but they ran faster than I could follow.  One thing I would do different on the gun would be to put a better scope.  I put on a Mueller, and yesterday evening found out how lousy the light gathering is on the scope.  Had to pass up a shot at an axis because I could not see well enough.

I USE A REMINGTON WOODSMAN 742 IN 30-06 W/ A NIKON 3-9X40 PROSTAFF IN AREAS WHERE I CAN GET LONGER SHOTS, AND A WESTPOINT (MARLIN) LEVER ACTION IN 30-30 W/ OPEN SIGHTS IN MORE WOODED AREAS.

SOMEONE ONCE TOLD ME THE WOODSMAN WAS THE BEST SINGLE SHOT RIFLE REMINGTON EVER MADE. HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH MINE YET THOUGH.

Where we hunt in Maine, it is definitely “Remington Country” and it’s mostly autos:
Dad shoots a 742 in .30-06
Both of my brothers shoot 7400 synthetics in .30-06.
My cousin uses a 740 in .30-06.
My other cousin’s husband uses a 740 in .280.
Our friend Randy uses a 7400 in .30-06
One of his son’s uses a 7400 Carbine in .30-06
Our friend Dick uses either: BAR in 300 mag., or 7400 in .280, or 740 in .30-06
Another friend Joe uses a BAR in .270

That’s a significant number of autos for sure! In fact the only non-autos are:
Me with a 7600 Carbine in .280
Randy’s other son with a 760 in .30-06
My friend Aime who uses a .308 lever action.

I do a lot of my varmit (crows and coyote) shooting with a Bushmaster Varmiter, with great results.  In years past I deer hunted quite a bit with a Ruger 44 Carbine (old style) until a fellow offered me way more for it than it was worth to me.  I have also hunted a time or two with a Springfield M1A which I like very much.  I have not had any problems out of the semi-autos and I have never not gotten a deer that I would have gotten with another action type, conversely I don't think I have ever killed a deer with a semi-auto that I wouldn't have also killed with a bolt action or single shot, the same is not true for the varmit shooting because of multipile targets often being present but won't stick around for long after the shots start cracking.

I have shot multiple deer in one shooting session with my semi's that would have escaped my bolt rifle. Three in about six seconds with my BAR and two with my M1A.

I hunt coyotes, bobcats and feral hogs down here in Tx. with an AR15 M4A2 topped off with a 2 to 7 power Leupold. I use a Blackhills 52 grain match hollow point. Works on all, even the 350 lb+ hogs. Have thought about whitetail but, haven't yet. 8)

I use my M1 on deer drives, have shot multiple deer (legal here in Ks) at one standing.  I don't mean to say I spray bullits, but sometimes you have a 3-5 second window when 8-10 come running past you and when they see you they seem to freeze for a moment.
anyway in dark woods I don't need a scope, M1 works great.

It is an M1 Garand.  the same Kraut killer my dad used at Normandy.
I also have a 1941 Johnson, works great, actually in many ways better than the Garand.  I bought it 30 yr. ago and just shot it occasionally.  But 2 yr. ago thought I would freak out my hunting buddies on a deer drive and brought the Johnson.  If you have ever seen one they are very radical looking.  Killed a deer with it, but then I found out how much they are worth and put it back in the attic.  I will probabally sell it to a collector who will appreciate it to round out his display some day.  But I just like to look at it sometimes, like the other Mil Surp rifles I have.  The machine work and time it took to make are certainly a departure from current weapons.

I have heard many interesting stories about the Garand from ww2 vets. A vet from our pistol team used a Garand in 600 and 1000 yard competition with iron sights, very accurate. You would not want him shooting at you at 1000 yards.

I have in the past.  I used to own a 742 in .243 and a 7400 Carbine in .30-06 and hunted deer with them for about 20 years before I sold them.  Hunted last deer season in Wisconsin with my Uncle's BAR in .30-06.  Have just ordered a BAR in 7mm Rem. mag.

For deer hunting, I've used a scoped SKS. I did an Accraglass bedding job, a little work on the trigger, and put in a 5-shot magazine to make it easier to carry. Took two deer, one at 20 yards (I had a good blind!), the other a running shot at about 60. Both were one-shot kills.
