M-1 Garand Problems

I have a Grand that fails to P/U rounds out of en-bloc sometimes and sometimes fails to reset the sear after cycling. Any Ideas?  :?

Questions first - These are not handloads but full power ball ammo?  Your gas nut under the muzzle is tight and the surface is clean?  The rear of the bolt as well as inside and outside lug tracks are greased as well as the op rod where it glides on the barrel? The gas tube is reasonably clean? The op rod is not bent? My hunch is that the bolt is not coming back far enough to pick up the round and cock the trigger.  That would mean you were not getting the proper energy to the op rod.  If ammo is good and lube is good I would look at the gas hole into the barrel.  You may get a better answer from someone else here.  If you don't I would go to www.jouster.com where all the M1/M14 guys hang.  Best of luck, I hope it is an easy fix for you.  JB :?

If your using reloads some powders don't work with semi-auto's too well you have to find the specs for reloading for garands if thats the problem. I ran into this when I put my reloads in my buddies garand.  It did cycle but wasn't very accurate as my '06 is.     BigBill

Garands dislike "slow" burning powders.

RWH:  JB Mauser asked you all the right questions and one of the other fellows hit on yet another possible problem with either reloads using the wrong powder or possibly some of the light magnum ammo not using fast enough buring powder to cycle the action.  

I would first run through JBs list, then check your ammo.  If you are purchasing mil-surp ammo, make certain it is American made.  Not all foreign made mil-surp is up to American standards.

Wekk Guys, No reloads, Mil-Surp from far off and not so exotic places. The PMC 180grainers shoot so=so. The cleaning will help more than anything I think. I have not been back to the range yet. The previous owner shot it but didn't clean it very well ME thinks.

You maybe want to use a gun grease or a moly-anti-seize in the semi auto action I don't like using gun oil alone.      BigBill

I read all the posts.I think the problem is lube & cleaning.You need Lubriplate .GM sells it.About $6 a tube. One will last several years. Part no. is  1#1050109. Don't use just oil. The M-1 is meant for grease.You need a M-1 manuel but I'll do what I can. Grease the surfaces where the bolt travels.also where the op-rod slides on the barrel.Remove the trigger group & grease the hammer  & the bolt.Never ever shoot 180gr. ammo in your rifle again.168 or smaller fac. loads is it.The powder is too slow & it will crack the receiver or damage the op-rod with 180 or bigger.I'm a shooting coach & treasuer of a CMP club so I know of what I speak.
