Heard any new hoopla on a 480 Ruger Blackhawk?
« on: April 15, 2006, 04:56:46 PM »
Ran into a guy that told me ruger is gonna build a Blackhawk Hunter in 480. I told him I'd believe it when I see it. Anybody heard anything new gossip.

Thanks.

I believe at SHOT this past february Ruger rep said that they were to concentrate on the current models, especially the 50th Ann. .44 mag Blackhawk this year but that next year we'd see some very interesting products.
I've also been told that the Hunter models use a different bbl attatchment (threads ?) than the std. non-hunter models.  This is what's keeping the .32 Hunter from being a go.  If true, a .480 Hunter could require somethign new altogether.

I'm probably a bit cynical but here's my thought; I think Ruger has a new, never tried marketing strategy which goes like this: they hope that people will like their new cartridge well enough that they buy "compromise" revolvers. When enough people have bought them, they'll then release the guns we really want. That will cause a glut of 480s as the compromise guns (which we really don't want) are dumped on the market. That, in turn, will cause prices to drop on those while we'll still pay full fare for what we really wanted in the first place. This will help to arm more people with 480s. It's a win/win situation for Ruger and other gun makers. Yeah, it won't be a win for us but we'll still smile 'cause we'll have what we wanted in the first place. Who knows, maybe factory ammo will be cheaper when more people buy the compromise guns. :?

If Ruger were to make a stainless Bisley (Acusport) in .480 I would be all over it like stink on a wet dog! I am not holding my breath but I believe it would be a perfect hunting gun. IMHO of course.

Well, they already have the SuperRedhawk in .480, so it makes sense that they would keep that their big hunter, and leave the blackhawk for what is already there.  You don't see ruger doing what Taurus and Smith have been doing, with massive amounts of new handguns dumped on the market.

:cb2: Maybe so, but there are still a lot of us SA shooters that would much rather have a Bisley in .480 than a Super Redhawk any day.

Well, I'm sorry if I offend anyone (probably not on the single action forum) but I feel the Super Redhawk has to be the ugliest gun every made.  Ok, the engineering is good, I'll give them that, but I wouldn't buy one no matter what they chambered it in.  If Ruger wants their .480 to become popular, they need to chamber it in something that doesn't look like a 1948 Dodge Powerwagon!  It's kind of like a dress company sewing a wonderful, sexy evening dress then hiring Janet Reno to model it for them!  On the other hand, if they were to build a Blackhawk in .480 (are you listening, Ruger?) I'd buy one in a minute!  As it is now, I guess I will just have to keep saving for another Freedom Arms and send my money to them instead of Ruger.  44 Man.

I don't think a deer is gonna care how cute your gun is with 400 grains of lead coming at them!!!  Those SRH are shooters, great performance.  I have to admit though... my next handgun when I get the money is going to be a SBH hunter in .41mag...  :)  :)

I got to shoot a SRH in .480 and thought it was a great gun.  It's a good platform if you want to scope a revolver.  It would definitely be my choice if I wanted a scoped revolver.  Would I like to have a SBH in .480?  You betcha!

got to agree to a point. The super redhawks ive shot have all been exceptionaly accurate guns. I guess i personaly dont have much use for a scoped revolver so i dont feel a need to put up with the looks of one. If theyd make a regular redhawk 5.5 inch in either caliber id be all over those as fast as a bisley. Whack the barrel to 4 inch and then youd really have something!!!

My Grandmother used to say "Pretty is as pretty does".  To paraphrase Col. Whelen "only accurate revolvers are interesting".  Is the SRH a beautiful gun-NO.  No arguments there.

Is the SRH virtually indestructible, and extremely accurate-YES. No arguments there either.  Are my Smiths and custom SA revolvers prettier-absolutely.  Will they shoot better and last longer.  Probably not.

Ugliness has its points.   Remember, at one time the 1911 Colt was known by the acronym "..Old Ugly..".   Then there is the old song "..If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, just make an ugly revolver (sorry, I meant woman) your wife...".   :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

Shoot what makes you happy.

The 480 looks good on paper, but I haven't seen any other makers chambering guns for it, and mostl likey won't for a while.  I hope it hangs around, but it may become a more obscure round with all of the hype about 460 and 500 S&W, and other new loads.

And it's not only the new loads that are doing it.  The .454casull and .475LB have been overshadowing it for years for certain performane reasons.

:cb2: I don't believe that was the point in making the .480. It was supposed to be for the shooter who wanted more than the .44 mag, but couldn't handle, or didn't want, the .475/.454/etc., etc., etc.

I notice that many of the posts by .475 and .500 shooters are looking for "reduced loads", or lighter bullets.  That is exactly the niche of the .480 Ruger.  If you want more power, a 400 gr bullet at 1100+ fps per second is nothing to sneeze at (after firing a few cylinders of those, I do not understand the comparison to a .44 Magnum).

I bought mine from the dealer who had ordered it for the original owner.  16 of the 20 cartridges remained in the original box of ammo that was bought with the gun.  The rings had never been attached to the gun, and all original paperwork accompanied the gun.  I bought it as a trade piece, but it kind of grew on me.

The price was the attraction, but after a set of Badger grips, a trip to MagNaPort's custom shop, Weigand mount and rings, new B & L scope, etc., I forget how cheap it really was!  :D  :D
