Kyote

I have built a bunch of cow horn calls and a few Howlers. One of the calls i made was a small cow horn about six inches long, cut the point off and drilled it out to take a wodden mouth peice and installed a Jack rabbit throat in it and its good for long distance, Also made some open reed calls but it just depends on how i feel. I have real good luck by using my mouth and it very hard to explain how i do it but, It has worked since 1948. The man that i thought was good with a call was a USG trapper and he sure could bring in the Coyotes. Its going to be neat to hear what some will say :D ...........Joe..............

Joe I have made plenty of cow horn calls, but they were the type used when hunting with dogs that run animals.and we used them to call the dogs and talk to each other in the jungles.have not made one for yotes yet.to time consuming for me right now.as I have a million and one things going on when I am not at work.I have called in several coyoyes with my mouth. But it hurts my lips after a while.and find several calls on a lanyard around my neck works fine.I have made calls out of differnt bullet cases.and they work great. But since I found this article..I beleive I am going to try and make a cow horn call.all I need now is some cow horns..that should not be easy to find.

Interesting info. The very first documented attempts using artifical sounds to call predators was in 1944 by J.R. Alcorn a California boy and a goverment hunter working in Nevada.
The first production calls for the publics use were from A.L. Lindsey 1949 ( Pied Piper calls ) and were made from cow horns " I happen to have one".
Oso45-70, you were one of the very first. I could use more information from you for my museum if you wouldn't mind. You're a part of history in this great sport and it should be carried on.
