.270 Chamber Size
« on: April 17, 2006, 10:59:22 AM »
I'm new to the Handi-Rifle and have been reading as much as I can on this forum.  You guys are a wealth of info and I feel like I have learned a lot so far.

My groups have been anywhere from large to huge.  My question is concerning the chamber of my .270 because it seems large to me.

One of the first things I noticed was how the brass had stretched in diameter.  Once fired, the brass ejects easily but has stretched to the point that you can actually see a slight bulge where the case wall meets the head.  The primers look fine and there are no signs of a pressure issue on or around the head stamp area.  The sides of the head come out of the chamber shiny and clean.  The case walls come out of the chamber relatively free of carbon but have lost most all shininess.  I'm not sure, but it looks to me like the chamber walls must be rough and that that roughness is being stamped into the fired brass.

I have found that I can put a new factory round in the chamber, and with my finger on the primer, wiggle the cartridge inside the chamber.

Is this much wiggle room normal in a Handi?  How likely is this to be the cause of my accuracy woes?

None of my Handis have that much room inside the chamber. That does sound like too much. Worse comes to worse you might have to call CS and send it back for a replacement.  The way you describe it the chamber sounds too large at the rear. But I am no expert and am just a beginner reloader.
Is this a new gun of used? How long have you had it?

My 44 mag barrel is .006" oversized in the chamber area, and the brass bulge's just ahead of the web.Just about everyone that has used hot loads in it and the 445 supermag rechamber have the same problem.  Digger

That's seems excessive to me..I would give Gordon a call at NEF and discuss your problems with him..He probably will want you to ship it back and check it there. They normally take good care of their customers..so...give them a call..toll free 1-866-776-9292

Some 30-06 type brass 270 in cluded that I have measured at the base are .464 some even at .462.
A liberal base in a Handi chamber is .472 or more  never less than 470.

So slack in the base is quite normal. Hand loading and finding a die that halve ass fits the fired case is were the trouble comes in.

Even is a custom chamber like my 257 Roberts I had to polish 0.003 out of the die so I wont over work the brass. Dies are usual too tight. The 6x47 custom Redding die was no exception. I had it reworked and converted to a bushing die.

This makes custom fitted dies very expensive but they do a good. job. They work the body only one thou radial and the necks only three thou in one direction no expander plug.
