I am considering buying a 7mm-08 pistol barrel for deer hunting. Where I hunt it is shotgun only, but there is a loophole that allows pistol hunting of any caliber. So I was thinking of the 7m-08. How does this caliber perform in 15" on a encore frame??

I've got a 7mm-08 pistol barrall and it shoots ok I have to get a trigger job done on this encore and the recoil is pretty stout but probalbly more manageble once I get the trigger done. I like the barrell and I look forward to getting it sited in, i have to get the a new T'SOB scope mount on it because the Leapold dual dovetail rings I have on it now lets the scope move in the rings because of the recoil.

I used to have a 15" .308 barrel on my Encore. The recoil was stout, but no more than a really hot 44 mag. The Encore in pistol format is heavy, especially when you add some Warne Maxima bases and rings and a handgun scope. That helps tame some of the recoil. Definately not an easy gun to shoot standing unsupported.

From what I've heard, never fired one, the 7-08 has less recoil than the .308. I bet bullet selection has a lot to do with it. I would imagine that the recoil wouldn't be as much, and in that case it would be more tolerable. Mine printed MOA groups at 100 yards regularly, they're all supposed to, that's T/C's claim.

I'd say go for it.

Barrel and scope should be here tomorrow. I went with the Pro Hunter fluted barrel and a Bushnell 3200 2-6x32. What grain pellets does the 7mm-08 like?? I've heard 140's shoot pretty well.

I got a nice doe last fall at 95 yards with my 7-08 15" Encore pistol. Dropped like a rock with 140 grain Hornady's......had a very large exit wound though, think they were the Lite Magnum rounds............

use ballistic tips.140 grain.They work real good on deer.I've never had to trail a deer more than 20 yards using them

I think you will enjoy the 7-08. I have one in a 15" with 2x6 pistol scope and in my opinion the recoil is mild. I shoot 45LC revolvers, and many Contenders and Encores and I don't think my 7-08 has any more recoil than my .243. I shoot 140grn Nosler BT's and they shoot well. I tried some Remington 140grn SP's for sighting scope and too see how they shot. The shot 1.5" at 100yds. I have only put about 40 rounds through it so far but it will be in the field this fall or sooner if I get onto some coyotes or PDogs. I just loaded some 120grn V-Max bullets by Hornady and will see what velocity they run. They should be good for varmints.

i have a 7-08 rifle barrel and this may just be my experience, but i shot about 6 boxes of winchester ballistic silvertips through mine and found that i couldnt get them to group very well. they were grouping at about 1.5 inches at 100 yrds, but at 200 the groupings increses to almost 5 in's. this was over about a 2 week period, but i switched to remingto core lokt and the groups dropped to about 2 in's at 200. it may judst be me or my particular barrel, but id put money on that it was the bullet that wasnt grouping. so just a heads up on my experience. i have heard good things about the hornandy round, but if you have the means, the 7-08 is a re-loader's dream round. you just have to take the time to figure out the best combination of powder and bullet depth etc.

what grain bullet were the winchesters? and for that matter the Remington. Sucks that the silvertips didn't fly, they are EXPENSIVE. I am starting to reload and want to find out what grain flies the best out of the encore 15" pistol rifling. Don't want to have to buy a bunch of bullets for nothing. From what I gather 140's seem to be fairly true.

I just got my 7mm-08 barrell back from SSk today and cant wit to shoot it I had a arrester muzzlebrake put on it and a T'SOB scope base put on it. I wonder what type of ammo to shoot for the best accuracy I have shot remington 140 grain through it and it does OK 3 inch groups but I would to get it a lot better. I would appreciate any advice. I dont reload so I would like to try a factory load.

I shot my 7mm-08 last night and I am getting better at shooting it but I can shoot 2 or 3 shots in a 1inch to 2inch pattern then it will throw one off about 4 inches away it does this consistantly even when somebody else shoots it I need some help and was wondering about free floating the barrall if this would help.

Steemer,

Take your gun back to the range and try this...Shoot 1-2 shots and set the pistol down for a while. Let it and yourself cool completely,then try 1-2 more shots. Short,high velocity calibers with compensators could spell FLINCH very quickly. Flinching can be caused by noise as quickly as recoil. None us like to admit but it happens.

Thanks for the advice, I do flinch sometimes but most of the time I do it I can tell that I have flinched. I keep hereing about free floating the barrall how is this done.

After shooting mine last nite, I have to say again that the ole FLINCH could very well be the problem. I had earplugs in AND muff over them. This thing is LOUD!! I shot it once with only the plugs and promptly put the muffs back on.

Thats my plan too. I'm in shotgun territory where I hunt in Wisconsin, but you can shoot any caliber pistol that you want.

What state do you hunt in? In IL they only allow "straight" cased cartridges inorder to prevent anyone from using a necked down cartridge like a rifle has. The only exception is a loop hole allowing 30 Bellum caliber made by Mike Bellum.

My suggestion to anyone trying to group or site in an encore pistol barrel is buy a buttstock. You can't transport the firearm with the buttstock on it legally but put it on at the range. Then tell us whether the barrel groups. Once you see it group you'll be more confident in it and your pistol shoting will be steadier with that confidence.

Just a thought, but if you are concerned about recoil and still want a handgun for deer, then why not consider the 7-30 Waters? It's based on the 30-30 case and the recoil is mild, yet the bullet is excellent on deer out to 250 yards.

I don't know how the heck you would do that with a pistol scope on the rig. I think my Bushnell has a 20" relief.

With a 15 inch barrel you will be creating a short barreled rifle, clearly illegal. If you do this anywhere you are in violation of the law. At a public range you may just be doing it in front of a law enforcement officer who chooses to make an issue out of it.

I don't recommend a buttstock on any barrel shorter than 16 inches. The hassle of a lifetime may occur.
