How many turkey decoys do you put out?

How many hens?  What about a jake?  I've got four hens and one jake.  Does feeding versus alert hen position really matter?

I put one to two decoys out when I am calling. I will always put out a hen decoy and sometimes if I feel like it, a jake. That is if I know there is a big gobbler working a particular roost.

I use 2 hens and a jake mounting a hen - the reason behind this set up is that I'm trying to get "Tom" angry at the jake makin out w/ the girls in his territory - which will make the Tom want to come in and kick the jakes butt .... I found out that just using hens may make the Tom hang up as he wants the girls to come to him.

I set one jake standing at 20 yrds, one jake feeding at 18 ydrs, and one hen standing at 15 yrds.

The reason is because they were the only decoys I had and I wanted to know the approximate distance I was shooting.

I called in a young gobbler and shot him at 12 yrds. If it had been a wise old gobbler maybe I would not have been so lucky.

I use one hen and a jake coming up behind her with that special look in his eye.

I use "Clarence" every single time I turkey hunt.  I made him after the 2004 turkey season.  He's been physically attacked at least 3 times by one or more toms in the last 2 seasons, each of which resulted in a dead tom.  In two years I would image he was a direct contributor to 7-8 toms.  Last year on kansas opening day three toms beat him until his stake was bent over and the paint on his head was chipped.  Opening day in Missouri 05 resulted in a dead tom and a couple of pellets in Clarence's head too.  I usually use him with 1 or 2 hens, or sometimes even by himself (he was by himself on opening day last year).  Generally use more decoys early in the season and a single decoy at the end of the season.  The only downside is he's hard to carry around and the flesh on the wings stinks for a few months after you make him.
