lee 500r bullet with gascheck
« on: April 21, 2006, 01:37:09 AM »
i have bin shooting the lee 500r plain base bullet for some time with very good results. but with my smokeles load it is at max velosity with  out getting leading so i think i came up with the soluetion, fit a gascheck used a lee champher tool to champher the base of the bullet then very carefuly tap agascheck on with a small malet then run it through the lee sizer die. it worked nice tite fit will have to see how they they shoot but i think they will work and this will allow me to bump up my load. will post when i have tride them see the pic the one on the rite is the gascheck.

Now that's good old fashion American ingenuity! I have the same mold, and although I never push it hard enough to need a gas check in my old guns, it's still great information!
Look forward to hearing how it performs Bernie!

thanks marlinman.i have bin shooting the buff classic with the 500r sized at .457 it shoots better at that size, tryed it at 800 yards the load was 512 grn 500r winchester case win primer 39.5 grn of adi 2207[h4198]same powder mv of 1515 fps group size 17 inch which i think is quite good all shots of shooting sticks.tryed 42 grn 2207 for mv of 1605 fps after 10 shots got a little leading at the muzzel group size 16/3/4inch. my bore sluged at .452-.459 at the breech end and .450-.457 at the muzzel a little choke lol.thats why i am going to try the 500r with gascheck,i have the lee 500 flat point caschek mould pushed that at 1690 fps with no leading but the 500r is more accuret in the buff.if i can get 1650 fps it gives a muzzel enrgy of 3095 foot pound's,i will also try adi 2208[h-varget] same powder the guys say they get good results with that powder.all so going to try shooting with the barrel on the sling of the shooting stick's i have read that when you find the sweet spot it is more consistant than resting with the forearm when i have tested the gascheck 500r i will do a report on it.

Have a look at a gas-check-making lathe created by drinksgin. The post is in the thread at the top of this (single shot rifles) section. It's in the "Pictures of Single Shot Rifles" thread.

Handi, he was using either the Williams FP target or the Smith Long Range sight, most likely the Smith from the posts below.
