Hondo Texas Area Update
« on: April 22, 2006, 03:49:57 AM »
I'm pleased to report we finally got some rain in Medina county.
Racked up 1.5 inches in the last few days.
Not a drought breaker, but it certainly helps.
Heavy hog activity at the feeders right now.
Just back from 2 nights out there, but didn't see anything.
Of course, the thunderstorms that came through didn't help
us until after the fact. The morning after all of that is when we
found the feeder areas totally tracked and trampled up.
Rooting all over, as might be expected.
Timing is everything, as usual.

Our place South of Castroville seems to be immune from any rainfall this year!  I'm glad you are seeing some rain.

I guess that last sytem missed you again, based on the date of your post.
We picked up another 1/2 inch the other day.
Still not great of course.
I wonder how long this will go on before things get better.
One of the guys in my area says the total for the year so far
is only a little over 4 inches.
The city of Hondo itself officially is less than 3 inches so far this year.

Yeah, I'll be in court in Hondo in the morning.  Dry dry dry!

However, I'll be chasing hogs next weekend a little west of Gatesville.  There is a live creek on that place that keeps the hogs close.

We got about an inch in Quihi during the same time period.
I hunted consecutive nights @ a tripod over looking the tank and a corn feeder. Everything was coming to the water as its the only natural source in over 400 achers. Coyotes, Turkeys, Deer, Hogs, cows, etc.

I took a 125lb sow one night and a 30lb piglet the next...piglet was for our camping menu ;-) We camped at Chalk Bluff just outside Uvalde...we got rain there on the 20th.

You were not far from me Tom.  You know the turn off of Highway 90 just west of Castroville on the way to Quihi?  My brother lives on the first road to the riight.

Our place is south of that 5 way intersection about 6 miles.

Some of that area had to have got something last night.
1.4 inches here in only 30 mins on the NE side of San Antonio.
Hailed for the entire 30 mins also.
Looked like some really heavy stuff in parts of Medina County at least.
However, the area I operate in north of Hondo did not get any of that.
We need more widespread rains still.

Scott,

I know excatly where you describe. It's taken me a while, but I'm finally getting to know my way around my second home. My wife & I are actually starting to look for a piece of property out there...maybe off of Potranco somewhere so that our 6 year old can go to the same school as her cousins do.

The family properties are mostly off of CR 351....Right where the proposed Quarry is going to be  :x

We got a little rain and I actually got caught in some of that hail.  It looked like the heavy stuff passed south of us.  But we will take any moisture we can right now!

The area is sure growing.  Houses going up everywhere.

I've posted to the following forum on this now:

http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=92679

We had another rain system move through last night.
1.25 inches reported 5 miles south of Pipe Creek.
Just under 2 inches 14 miles north of Uvalde, off Hwy 83.
Here on the NE side of San Antonio, .8 of an inch.
Still not out of trouble around here though, I hate to say.

I was out there last night watching the feeder, but we decided
to make a run for it when the weather started moving in.
( The forecast missed this call, nothing was supposed to happen.)
Had not seen any hogs before we took off.
Maybe next time.

Got another inch of rain in the last day or so north of Hondo.
I'm going out there tomorrow afternoon, will come back
Sunday. We'll see if anything is going on and report back.

Got out there Friday, and it was obvious there had been hogs
around. They do like that wet ground.
Saw about 8 of them Friday night around 11:30.
I was trying to pick off the "ringleader", a black and white sow.
But, she would not present a good shot, stayed back in the
brush. The rest were very nervous, kept milling around and
darting back and forth. They didn't stop long enough to suck up
all the corn on the ground either. A few minutes after they took off,
I heard coyotes close by. I guess this is what had them on edge.
Stayed out until 3 am, but never saw any more hogs.
Saturday night. stayed out until 1 am, but saw no hogs that night.
It was one of those really quiet nights.

Wow, rain two mornings in a row here in SA !
Totaled 1.6 inches here on the NE side for the two days.

As usual though, Medina County had much less rain than here.
I got reports of 1/4 to 1/2 inch out there Saturday.
Today ( Sunday ) it looks like only the NE corner of Medina County
had any real amounts of rain. This is based on doppler radar
storm totals I saw this morning.

Things have gone downhill again since around the 4th of July.
Had some rain then, but really nothing since that time.
Long range forecast says little chance of improvement at least through October.
Rats !

We're trying to decide whether we're coming out for Thanksgiving or CHRISTmas this year. I plan to bring my Bow this time as I have a great bow stand that overlooks whats left of our tank. If we come for Thanksgiving and there's been no rain, I'm not sure what activity there'll be. If I come at CHRISTmas, then the Hogs will most likely have gone nocturnal due to Deer hunting pressure  ???

My area is 20 miles north of Hondo, out FM 462.
Hogs nocturnal ? I have seen hogs 3 times during daylight hours
in the last 2 years....and there's a lot of heavy cover in my area at that.
If you see them before dark, I think you're very lucky.
As for deer season, they'd probably be hiding out well before Thanksgiving even.
That's already a couple of weeks into the season.

I agree, I rarely see pigs until just before sunset...on a good day !!
I have however taken a couple of Boars during daylight...they're usually cruising up & down the fence line totally focused on a sow in heat on the other side, and not me  :)
Tomorrow starts Connecticut's Archery season for Deer & Turkey and I can barely focus on anyhing else today!!

Beaumont is over 200 miles east of my area.
I'm sure they've had more rain than around here.

Just got a phone call tonight from one of the guys that lives out
where I hunt. After that 1.8 inch rain, the hogs ran amok. They have
rooted the daylights out of a large area. ( Over 150 acres worth have been
hit that I know of. )
