IM HOOKED!!
« on: April 23, 2006, 03:26:30 PM »
Well, I shot my first smallbore silhouette match today. I must first say what a great bunch of guys and gals. I had a blast. Recorded my first two scores in the book and cant wait to shoot again. I shot a 8-40 in hunter and an 8-40 in Standard. Guess i need to practice but shot better than I thought considering it was the 3rd time I shot the gun and that It was the 4th time I shot a .22 in almost 7 years.

G'Day Kevin
Welcome to the wild wacky world of Silhouette. Hope you enjoy the fine art of slamming steel as much as I do. Just go out and enjoy.

Us old farts really like it when you new guys come for the first time and shoot the same low scores that we did when we were starting out.   I think I shot a 9 in my first match, now I feel bad if I don't shoot at least in the high 30s.  Keep it up and don't give up.  In a few years you will make it and it will be fun all the way.

We have a guy that started shooting Smallbore Cowboy Rifle Silhouette with us this year who started in the 30s, first time out.  What a drag.  Here is a newbie that outshoots a big portion of the shooters.  What is there to look forward to?  He probably won't last long.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Thanks for the responses. I am setting goals of being able to hold scope on targets better, get 5 in a row, have some trigger work done. Maybe that will help some. I cant wait for the weekend to shoot again.

Poor Newbie

Y'all ought to be ashamed of baiting a poor newbie like Kevin.  Might as well call him Kevin Poor from now on.  Look at whacha done.  He's getting excited and settin' goals.  A trigger job?  Yah, right.

Pretty soon it's gonna be a better scope and then a good used Annie.   Before he knows what's happenin' he's gonna calling up Pearson & Pharr.  It'll be like doin a drug deal...can't let the wife know, gotta sell stuff to come up with the money.  Pretty soon he'll be drivin' all over the country tryin to get a fix.  You just wait some day, he'll sell the house and live in a travel trailer moving from match to match.

And there y'all are slappin him on the back all the while knowin ya just hooked another Silhouette Junkie.  I can see it now poor Kevin P sittin in the circle, "Hi, I'm Kevin and I'm a shooter."

Hi, Kevin.  We're shooters too.

Welcome, Kevin

That was just too funny. I already done all those things you mentioned when I was a trapshooter 15 years ago.

PS  Anybody have a really nice camper that will fit on a 1969 chevy pickup. Oh and can I park it in one of your driveways so I dont have to pay a park or something. I need all the money I can get for practice ammo.

You guys are funny.

Hi Kevin;

I'm on the edge of Nowhere, just north of the burgeoning metropolis of Logan.  I can see Nowhere from here and it's looking better all the time now that we have our first strip mall.

You can park in the drive and I'll kick the kids out of the bathroom but the only thing I'm on the way to is Missoula if you're coming from Colorado Springs and gotta scratch the Regional Match itch.

Chuck (UT and WY State Champ) and I are going there June 3 and 4.  It should be a lot of fun.  The Hawkes from Colorado, the Wilsons from Montana and the Camps from Wyoming might be there.  Lauren Peter came to Lander last summer for the State Match so I think there's a good chance he'll come again as might Roger Sebesta.

There's more good people better than I who will show up.  So saddle up the old camper and come along.  I'm hoping to borrow a tent trailer so's I can become Shootin' Trailer Trash and avoid those ashtrays with doors they call motels.

Do you shoot in Colorado Springs or Pueblo? Could you let me know match dates?

Well done Kevin.

Glad you're enjoying knocking the little critters over as much as the rest of us do.

Goals are good, they must be challenging and achievable.

Don't worry too much about the score, or the 5 and 10 strings. They will come. You don't need to create additional pressure on yourself.
Just take one shot at a time.

Practice your offhand on paper, 25mtr, 50 mtr, whatever/wherever you can. Even with the airgun at 10mtrs.

Get your position and balance right,
and bring your group size down. There's an immediate goal for you.
If you can shoot an inch group at 25mtrs, then no chicken will be safe !
Get your head around the discipline needed to wait for the shot.

It's all worth it in the long run, and adds to the enjoyment when you exceed your expectations.

Way to go,
I look forward to seeing your progress, and your participation at State and National Championships.

Sean in 'Godzone'.

Thanks for the advice. I was going to ask if there is any excercises that I can do at home with a shrunken chicken on the wall or something. What you say makes sense. I will practice on the chickens alittle closer, trying to keep the groups good. I will shoot my next match in a couple weeks. Been practicing holding my sights on an apple in the back yard.  Hope the neighbors dont get nervous hehehhehe.
