Replacement stock for Model 77 - Tang safety
« on: April 24, 2006, 04:27:31 PM »
Anyone ever restock a M77-tang with the Bell & Carlson Carbelite?  Any other replacement synthetics out there worth considering?  Thinking of tinkering and restocking a 25-06 RS.

I've tried the Ramline on my tang safety 35 Whelen after the wood stock cracked.  It came back straighter on recoil and certainly seemed durable enough.  Fit and finish aspects were not great but for the price it was decent.  Certainly the Ramline was very functional and would make a great beater/loaner/truck gun stock but I could never warm up to it.  Later I ran into a deal on a McMillan that I couldn't pass up. The McMillan is a much better stock in all respects.  The profile matches the original Ruger stock and I am very satisfied with it, but the price of a new one isn't justifiable for every application.

The stock split on my Ruger M-77 .338 Win Mag.  I was scheduled for a hunt in a couple of days and did not have the time to wait for a Bell And Carlson.  The only thing I could find readilly availiable was a cheap Ramline.  Grabed it and put the action in it.  Right away I noticed I had to do something about the hollow stock.  Anytime anything touched it sounded like a drum. Took the recoil pad off and sprayed it full of foam.  Did the trick, in fact I haven't done anything to it since.  Shoot well, helps tame the recoil, that's enough for me.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
