H&R hammer spurs, new and old
« on: April 24, 2006, 05:05:42 PM »
Now where should this go....Rimfire, centerfire or shotgun? Hmmm....

I never noticed that there was a difference between the old hammer spur angle and new until I put my newly-aquired (Today!) rifles and one of my old Toppers next to eachother.

Look at how low the old one is in comparison to the new. I wish they would have left it low. Some scopes might have worked okay without the extension. Probably another lawyer thing. I have had my thumb slip on a couple of occasions with the oldies.

Oh well, low hammer or high, I still can't believe that these things aren't made in China for the low $$$ they get for them. A Sidekick is next on my list. H&R is still making quality stuff in the US. I hope they are able keep doing so...

Hammer profile isn't a new subject, Jbtazgrabber uses old style internals with no transfer bar to achieve a lower hammer, but he hasn't provided us with a source, Numrich lists the parts, but doesn't have em, I tried to order em.

Or you can make hammer modifications...

Thanks,

I was wondering if they could be converted or not. I may look into doing that.

I'll probably just mount longer eye relief scopes down the bbl a bit and keep the breech area clear though...

 Victor3, looks like you did some stock work on that Topper. Looks good. And you're not using that rear scope ring as a peep site, are you? Your Handi-lovin' forum friend, Hunman55

Naw, that aint no peep. It's one of them new extra wide field of view ghost-ring sights :) ! Actually, I was just trying different height rings on it when I took the pic.

My dad did the stock work on the shotgun back in the 70's. I need to put a new recoil pad on it. The old Sears model on it now is crumbling. I may do the .223 stock in similar fashion. The standard wood stocks on these things look like a rowboat oar to me. Probably would work well as a club if you run out of ammo too...

 Victor3, your dad did a good job.  You can get a nice recoil pad-Micheal's of Oregon- from Gun Parts on their website-www.Gunparts.com, used to be for less than $10 plus ship. These stocks can be made to look a lot better. Hunman55

Hunman - Thanks for the tip. I only use Pachmayr now though. The pads on my dad's old sporter Mausers and Springfields have not deteriorated at all in 40 years. Cost a bit more, but I think they're worth it in the long run...
