45-70 or 500
« on: April 25, 2006, 10:09:53 AM »
I am going to send in my Frame this summer once I have some Money again (stupid college) to get a 243 bull barrel for varmint hunting/deer rifle for my girlfriend.  I figure while its there I might as well get another barrel.

I looked at the H&R website and see a guy can get the 500 barrel now.  I am thinkin either the 22 inch 500 barrel or the 32 inch 45-70.

If I got the 32 inch barrel I would put it on the Lathe and knock the last couple inches of to get rid of the dovetail make it about 29-30 inch long.  It says its drilled and taped  for rear sights is that for scope mount or will i need to drill and tap it.  Of course Im going to put a scope on it probably a 4.5-14 or maybe a 8-25 something big (just because).  My dad has a Sharps repop 45-70 so we have all the reloading dies and everythin for that so that is a plus.

The 500 is a thumper no doubt which appeals to me.  I want something big that will put big holes in things.  Is it drilled and taped already? I have a freind that has 2 500 mag pistols with all the loading and casting  you would need.  He also has a 700 grain mould which he says he gets close to 1000 fps out of the 8 3/8 barrel which would be an interesting load out of a longer barrel, undoubtable good for deer and bear.

Ammo isnt going to be a problem with either.  Which is going to be a better gun for hunting/target shooting.  Im just looking for a thumper and these are the biggest I can get cheap.

Anyone have either?

All H&R/NEF rifle barrels are drilled and tapped for their scope base or a Weaver #82 base.

Definately get the 45-70!!!  It is a much more versital caliber, fun, and will do anything you ask of it in North America.  Besides, it's just so much fun to slide one of those long cartridges into the chamber!  I have the 'BC' and I love it!  I didn't think I would like the sights either as I have scopes on everything now days (old eyes), but I find I can group under 2" at 100 yards from the bench with those sights.  I also thought of cutting about 4" off the barrel and using it with a scope but I like it so much that way it is, i don't want to change anything!  I guess I'll just have to buy another one to do that with.  (any excuse for another gun, right?)  I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have with mine.  44 Man
