Need gunsmith for 541 remington
« on: April 25, 2006, 02:49:56 PM »
Does anybody out there  know a qualified gunsmith to work on  my 541 rem bolt rifle. I want to turn it into a real super tack driver.  Looking to get the job done once and done right. Thanks

u will need to search the web & find someone to mail it to,it is hopeless here in ct getting these guys to work on anything.....I had one that shot well enough but the trigger & the scope were not up to centerfire standards..U should try to determine if the barrel in that gun is really good/great to start with.before u sink any serious money into it...Improve the trigger/sights yourself, bed the action...If u need help I'm in wethersfield...If u have to get a new barrel it is not worth the money.IMHO..The little CZ is doing very well on the range for most of the rimfire guys I know..I liked the looks of that 541, pretty fancy but not the kind of money I paid accurate enough..mike in ct

The remingtons are good rifles and the actions have a really fast locktime.. Their barrels are usually quite good as are most remington barrels. The triggers can be cleaned and while not adjustable can be replaced with triggers that are. The 540X and 580series rifles are all siblings and triggers should interchange. I'd try doing the normal 22 rimfire tricks first, you may not want more...  bedding, barrel floating/tensioning, adjust trigger pull, find the ammo YOUR rifle prefers, recut the crown,.. etc.  Do these before spefing the bucks.. and yes.. imho the CZ 452/453's are better rifles all around..

Ct...The book that came with my 541 came with a list of authorized gunsmiths in CT...let me know where you are located and I can send the number of the closest....

Before you send to a gunsmith, let me tell you what I did for mine....I had tried all types of ammo, this gun would put 6 shots of 10 inside a nickle and throw 3-4 out of the group by 1/2 inch or so...I first adjusted the trigger pull...by loosening part #43 in your owners manuel...I used a digital fish scale to set it at  2 1/2 pounds (do this at your own risk)..And make sure to seal with fingernail polish to keep it from moving...To help the accuracy I changed the harmonics of the barrel...I took a fired 12 gauge shot shell....cut a 3/4 inch section out of the middle and then cut this in half, so you have a half moon, 3/4 inch long....I loosened the screws that hold the barrel to the stock and slid this between the barrel and stock....Mine is just above the forearm tip....I retightened the screws....

First trip to the range I shot a 10 shot group at 50 yards that can be covered with a dime...Used CCI High Velocity Hollow Points...For some reason my 541 has never liked the target loads, since I squirrel hunt and only take head shots I have stuck with the CCIs....Good Luck

flintlock,, you're right!! The 541 has the trigger mechanism of the 540X.. and so is fully adjustable..I had forgotten! (not that, that's something unusual!!) The shotgun hull pressure point is also interesting...and a new one!! If the fixes work I would advise making them permanent with AcraGlass..

plastic shims

I carry a nice assortment in my range kit just to fuss with the bedding pressure forends of any light sporters..Milk carton plastic ...hardboard & thicker stuff..just in case...once u get it set the glass or epoxy goes in to that thickness.....use 2 shims of the correct thickness & then fill inbetween them to  create the permanet pressure point ..works like a charm...mike in ct

I usually use clay to build dams to hold the bedding in place, then when set, remove a section in the center and the tops on both side. Creates a 'v' block bedding system that almost forces the barrel back to the same spot each time.. but the shotshell shim is a great tip..

« Reply #7 on: April 26, 2006, 08:15:43 PM »
Ct,  a couple of names who are recommended by lots of 541, 540, and 581 owners and have been for years.   I do my own work and have never had occasion to use either.   But I hear lots of good stuff about them.  Might want to give them a call.  don
