List of "Do-able"calibers..Standa
« on: April 25, 2006, 04:08:54 PM »
Ok, here's an open minded question for all you guys:

Give us a list of all calibers..Standard offered..or Wildcat..that are "Do-able" on a Handi SB-2 frame.

Taking into consideration the pressure limits, lock up, etc...
Big Bore, medium bore, small bore, Rimmed, Rebated, Rimless, Pistol, Rifle, Varmint/Target, Hunting, Self Defense,  Metric, etc..etc.
These are taken into consideration by all means with a very capable Smith, with all the right equipment and knowledge, what would they be?

Arron:

The list can be pretty long of what can be chambered in a Handi..

Just some I have been looking over and discussing with Wayne... and( 1 ) I have done by him..all from the 25-06 barrels..

My favorite...338-06 A-square and then you have a 338-06 Wildcat too...

35 Whelen...375 Whelen or 375-06 ...7mm JRS...270 JRS( 270-7mm Hawk or so I'm told)..6.5-06.......I list this on the 25-06 barrel namely because I personally would want a 26" cut-rifle barrel..Then of course you can have a normal 270-280 or 30-06 with a cut rifle barrel too to look at...

On a 243 barrel...you could have a ..308..7-08...270 Redding..338 Federal.. without much hassle...again all with a cut rifle barrel...and certainly not all of the choices either..

On a 223 barrel...well...the choices abound...and if it will clean up the chamber nicely..and the if the ejector/extractorwill work or can be replaced or if needed modified so be it..a 260 would be very nice in a stainless fluted configuration...as too a 6.5x55Mauser...as well or even a 7x57mm Mauser...and you can't forget Fred M's 257Roberts or 6x47...

These are just a few I have been going over..and no-where is it a complete list...the 222 Rem and the 225 Win are also 2 contenders for being very doable from a good Hornet barrel...You also have Quickdtoo's 405 Winchester..from a 38-55 Target...and his 45-120 from a Buff Classic...and his 35 Rem from a 357 Max...

There are countless things we can do with them..all it takes is money and time...

I've got a .22 Hornet that I reamed to a .225 Win.  The .22 Hornet can be reamed out to mess load of different cartridges thanks to its original small chamber.

The .223 Rem I have will be reamed to .220 Swift after I shoot up this ammo.

The. 7.62x39mm can be rechambered to .303 British and 7.62x54R (plus a few more I imagine).

50 S&W to 500 Martin (if you enjoy pain).

Ackley Improved rimless cartridges would be hard to do correctly to have the .004-.005" crush fit since you cant turn the barrel back.

All it takes is money and a idea of your wants, some you have to have
a good gun smith willing to work with you
I had a 22 hornett to 219 Zipper, 223 Rem reamed and cambered
 to a 25-35 win. ( some thing I wanted a long time)
A happy ol' dog after getting my 25-35 back.  :D  Marv,

Sorry Don,

The 7.92x39 is larger at the base than the 32-40  0.44? vs 0.424.

Reference is stevespages.com  (ricardelli (sp?) who posts here had a wonderful site of references)

Yes it will.

It will fire form to the larger size. I realize you don't have a perfect 32/40 but it is a wildcat size. It does work in a wildcat 32/40 which is what you have with any rechambered firearm.

Don't try it on my say so!

I'd like to see more handgun calibers. 45 acp, 9mm, 357 sig, .40 s&w, etc. I think 30 carbine would be neat too.

If H&R would come up with a configuration to compete with the Springfield M6 scout in handgun calibers, I think they would have a winner. They could make a light 16" bbl open sight model and advertise it as:

"A compact companion to your favorite handgun in the same caliber. Perfect for backpackers, bush pilots, boaters or anyone requiring a small accurate rifle without the added weight of a full size long gun."

Dang - I shoulda gone into marketing...

I believe these might be do-able. With, maybe a 22LR or a 17 barrel?

No...the cartridge your talking about is the 7x64 Brenneke...The 7mm JRS is a 30-06 with the shoulder moved forward a-lot..and a bit shorter neck....

(Left) There's been no shortage of .28-caliber wildcats based on the .30-06 and belted H&H cases. Left to right: standard .280 Rem, .280 RCBS, .280 Ackley Improved and Sundra's 7mm JRS. (Right) In Europe the 7x57 (left) and 7x64 (center) are the most popular 7mms. At right is the 7x68 Vom Hoffe, a rebated-rim cartridge like the .284 Win

Here's a link to a nice article about the 7mm family

Ok, I added a Disclaimer to this, just in case someone trys something stupid, dangerous, or otherwise completely out of the relms of what a SB-2 receiver can handle.
I don't want anyone possibily getting hurt on account of a thread I started.
So anyway, I'll try and give Wayne a call and see what he thinks of this list and if these are indeed safe and "do-able".
Or an email might be better...yeah an email.

It's a sad fact..but..there will always be stupid people that do stupid things..when it comes to rifles...wither you mention something about them or not... :(

Some folks know how to rechamber a gun..others don't and shouldn't even attempt it..The problem comes when folks try to save a few bucks and attempt  this on their own without really knowing what they are doing...and there is nothing you can do to prevent it either..

Whenever a discussion comes up to any rechambering or reboring..I always say to talk to a qualified gunsmith and discuss the project with them before forging ahead...Life is full of surprises anyhow..and it's always better to get a answer from a person who works on these rifles for a living..than to stumble blindly thru and get oneself or others hurt in the process..it's like getting a second opinion before having to have surgery...

The two calibers I'd really like are the .250-3000 and the .30 Carbine... both should be fine in a modern SB-2 and "do-able"... now, money and time... anyone got any of those to spare?  :-D

Welcome aboard, Robin Martin!! :D  Sure can, the .357mag barrel would work fine as a donor barrel, but the slower twist rate would limit bullet selection to the mid to lighter weights for .35 cal, I just had one done to .35 Remington by Wayne York of Oregunsmithing. I've got some 240gr Mt Baldy bullets I'm gonna try as soon as I get a chance, also waiting on some 200gr Beartooth bullets and an "M" die to help seat em!!

Welcome Robin Martin to GBO tornms :D

Quick How would it be to rebore a 308 to 358?
Iknow it would cost ( much much) more, but
You could have the twist like it needs to be,
for heavy bullets. Just a thought from a old man.

Marv, I think that would work just fine, then you could have any twist you wanted....but.....you could also just buy a .35 Whelen?? $220 for a complete rifle sounds like a better option unless you just can't live without a .358W. :-D

put me down for the 9mm and 45 ACP!

these are both fun to shoot, are available in low cost factory loads with copper and lead bullets, have tons of cast bullet mold available, and both have many sources of cheap brass.

the two caviats are that handi's must headspace on the mouth and have extractors.

i shoot a lot of both in handguns, so a handi would be fun and the plinking ammo source is there, cast bullet rejects, swaged military primer pockets, cheap surplus powders, and the list goes on!
