Model 40 Savage
« on: April 26, 2006, 04:40:37 AM »
Hello-- New here, so just wanted to say thanks for all the great talk and ideas I've seen so far. My question is-- Where can I find a Savage Model 40 in .22 Hornet???? No body around the Kansas City area can get me one. Maybe I was just dreaming when I read the article about them lol.
Thanks for any help on this-

Save your money and get a CZ, I bought a model 93 its the same as the model 40 with a hardwood stock a cheaper trigger. Out of 25 shots (Hornadays) I had to use a cleaning rod to get 7 of them out of the chamber. I tried Win out of thirty rounds I had to push out 2.The primers on these factory shells are backed out enought to see with the naked eye.
I called Savage and they said send it back. So I guess Ill see how good they are about fixing the problem.   Good Luck

SeeZee:

I've got a M40 Varmit Hunter in .22 Hornet and it shoots great.  I've taken several woodchucks and crows with it and find that so far it shoots and functions great.  Shoots sub-MOA with no problem using WW 45 Gr. SP's and Remington 45 gr PSP.  Haven't put any reloads through it yet but expect it will perform at least as good and probably better.

CZ are fine rifles and I have no experience with Savage 93's but I can tell you the M40 Varmit Hunter is a lot of rifle for the money.

Good Shooting.

THE .35 REMINGTON WAS GOOD ENOUGH IN 1906 AND IT'S GOOD ENOUGH NOW.

I agree, the CZ is a better gun. I have both and like them both, I love my CZ though. I have had cases stick on my 40 and called Savage. I barely had time to finish my complaint before the lady said she'd send a ups call tag for it, no questions asked I havent got it back yet so well see. The CZ is a great little walking around gun but the Savage has that cool Vamint feel I'm also not that crazy about the Savage loading mech. I have to push the cartridge in the chamber. I cant just set it on the ramp and let the bolt do its thing. My Savage only shoots about 1-1.25" but it has killed plenty of chucks, I didnt realize how poor accuracy was until I started to shoot paper. After that I became pretty unhappy with it. I should have left well enough alone. If youve never seen one the are a beefed up rimfire not a mini centerfire.

I've been considering one of these rifles myself.  I was hoping either nofun1 or deathray could give me an update on there guns.  Did Savage fix the problem?  How does it shoot now?  I know the problems were with extracting the cases, but I'm curious if after coming back from Savage it shoots better than it did before.  TIA!

No word yet from savage. its been a month. their first response was very fast. after that nothing. I'll post when I get it. I hope it shoots cause its such a sweet little Varmint gun. If not I am trading for a CZ527 in Hornet.

Thanks for the update!  Hopefully they'll get it back to you here pretty soon.  I ended up purchasing a Ruger.  I've heard quite a few horror stories about their 22 Hornets, but I have to try one for myself.  Kind of a Ruger fan.  If I end up w/ a lemon, I just might buy a CZ also.  Keep us posted on how your model 40 turns out!

I have a Ruger that I reamed to a k Hornet I love the feel and look of it its the staniless varmint. on paper it doesnt print as well as some others but it has killed tons of rock chucks, and crows. If you reload you might want to try Lil Gun powder, you'll get some very impressive velocity. Its a little dirty but performance is very good.

So far I am very impreesed with them and if the gun works right their customer service gate an A+++ form me. I will post when I test it.

I got it back from Savage and loaded up some test loads, settled on 13.0gr Lil gun and 42gr Calhoon bullet I got nice 1/2" groups and am very pleased I took it to Montana and it really worked well on the dog towns. I will deffinately keep it now, 40 vmax with Lil Gun was also very good.
