I want a new varmint gun!
« on: April 26, 2006, 04:33:21 PM »
I'm thinking about getting a handi-rifle. I want something to use on everything from ground squirrels to coyotes/bobcats. I'm wondering what varmint sized cartrige has the most consistent accuracy from gun to gun. I've heard bad things about the 243 and 223 on some pages but this is where I confirm info since you guys have been such a reliable source.  Oh, does it come in 220 swift? And, if so, how does it perform?

H&R - NEF doesnot make a 220 swift! I would say get a 223 Uktra.
It comes with a 24 inch bull barrel, and will shoot with good starting
work, Clean all the crud out of the action, polish bore with Flitz.
You may have do a trigger job on it. Marv

You should also consider the 204 versison, loaded the right bullet it is a great fur round (35 berger but there is a 45 sp comming from Hornady that gould give it a run for is money)  then loaded with he 39 seirras it will give a 22-250 a run for it's money on ground squirrls.

too bad it doesn't come in the swift  I've seen what those do to rockchucks!  could I have a 22-250 rechambered to it safely? and, if so, would the barrel be the right length for optimum velocity? a gun store in my area might be going out of buisiness and getting rid of inventory, so I might just get a stevens 200 in 223.  but, when was the last time you needed a fast second shot at a coyote in thick brush.

The .22-250  is too big at the head, the .223 could be rechambered to .220 Swift, tho. You'd probably want a 1:12" twist barrel, tho, the 1:9" would probably be too fast since the standard twist for the 220Swift is 1:14".
