Metal Detectors: What ya using? And what ya hunting for?
« on: April 27, 2006, 01:57:22 PM »
Right now i'm running a Minelab Sovereign Elite. Its a tone machine (no puter software) and will really punch down into the ground with its signal. My deepest coin find to date was a Mercury dime down about 16"

I mostly Coin Shoot but do go Cache Hunting in the woods when i suspect onetime Colonial habitation on a piece of land. I'm after the first American coin mintages.

My only detector is one that I got for Christmas in 1996 or around there.  It is the Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II series with headhpones.  It has proven very valuable many times when searching for objects hazardous to bare feet and vehicle tires.  It came in especially handy after a re-roofing job; found many nails and staples on the ground afterward.  Ouch!

I'm hoping for the most part to hunt for coins and jewelry, and maybe historic or collectable items later on.  The place I feel most likely to be successful is the beach.  But maybe I'll take a look in the parks/public playgrounds too, as I've heard they are good areas to hunt for coins as well.

The Bounty Hunters are good machines. A buddy i detect with uses a Bounty Hunter and man, can he find the good stuff! His silver coin finds are like at 70 now and six of those were in one hole and the last coin to be removed from the hole was a 1904 Barber half dollar!

Start around your own yard Patriot and see what you can find? You never know, there might be some real good finds in your own back yard?

What part of the country you in, Patriot? I might be able to come up with some leads for places to check out.

I currently have a Garrett Ace 250. Does real well for a $200 machine. So far I've only found stuff down to about 9 inches. I pretty much hunt for anything. I just like getting outside and enjoying the outdoors. I've got a few sites for old coins and I'm currently working onsome old sites for relics.

Some day I'm hoping to upgrade to a Whites but it may be awhile.

Hey, BW.  Sorry for the lengthy response time.  Thanks, glad to hear good things about the BH metal detectors.  I'm in the SoCal area.  We'll see what happens throughout the year, and I hope to discuss other things with ya and others later.

Hiya Meatball.

Sounds like your doing good. Garrets are great machines and made in the good ole USA! Keep pounding those old coin sites and show us your finds as we would sure like to see them.

I too want to get a Whites. A DFX to be exact, but at $1200+ it will be a while for me as well. Thanks for posting :D

Good deal Patriot. I will be here so when you have questions then let them rip. I will answer as best as i can.

So Cal huh? You have a ton of beaches to work on for all that lost jewelry not to mention old saloon/western/gold miner sites
California is a great detecting state! Hope you get out and start digging soon :D

On the advice of several "old timers" in my area, I ordered the Bounty Hunter Quick Draw II as my first MD. Will let you know how it turns out.

Hi Ahab, thanks for posting.

Yes let us know how it turns out. Bet you find some good stuff with that machine once you get a good area. Easy to use and you should pick up on it right away. Good luck. :D

Great machine Jh45gun! Keep us posted on your finds. Did you try your yard yet? If not, give it a try. When i first got mine i tried my GF's yard and found an old Colonial large cent. I rent so i havent dug up the property i live on but if i asked, the owner probably wouldnt care. I may get to it sometime.

Problem I have around where I live is a lot of the lawns have been filled in with fill so finding old stuff is kinda tough but not completely impossible. I prefer to find old homesteads ect, but I have not pursued the hobby like I should I have to get on that and do so. Yea Garrett makes a nice machine. I know things can still be found  but I wish I would have gotten into the hobby a lot sooner. I feel while the obvious places like parks and school grounds still may yield a find I think I would prefer finding some ground that has been over looked or never really searched well. Research is the key and I have not spent enough time on that to really find some better areas. Plus while the area I live in was settled in the middle to late 1800's (Northern WI) It does not have the age or population density of places in the east or south that yeld good finds nor does it have the battle ground areas that those areas produce interesting stuff. While I have read of cache's and other interesting finds and yea I know they are out there I have found talking to some old timers includeing my deceased 87 year old mother now passed about two years that in this area money was tough and folks around here if they lost any money they usually looked for it and gave a good search anyway before giving up. That is not saying that treasures are still not to be found I am sure they are but again that is where research comes in which I will have to develop better.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

You are on the right track, JH, research is the key! Become proficent in finding old areas and securing permision to hunt there and you will make very nice finds

Never overlook areas because they have been hunted before. In metal detecting there are things as seldom as satisfying as making a good find in an area that has been pounded over for many years and missed by someone else.

Detectorists often say that an area is never fully hunted out and i can attest to this firsthand.

Get researching and you might be surprised what you come up with in your area. Dont be hesitant to ask permission to detect that old house yard down the street or that old church on the other side of town. The worst that can happen is you get denied, but more often enough you will get the go ahead and that just might be the edge over the last guy that thought about detecting it but never got the gumption up to ask.

Keep us posted :D

I have a Minelab Quatro, had a couple Sovereigns, wish I'd got another one. Had Minelab gold machines, sold to my brother. I think Minelabs will beat all others. I've tried a lot of others. 'Course, that's just my opinion.

Welcome Barber

Sounds like you are a veteran detectorist and its
good to see another Minelab user.

Feel free to post anything you want about treasure hunting and pics of your finds if you like.

This forum is still pretty new, so anything you might want to post about would sure help. :D

A Garrett GTA 500 bought new in '95 or '96. Tried a Hot Head coil but wasn't exactly impressed with the results so switched back to the original. Bought it for my wife but she does let me use it if I want. :)

I have a Bounty Hunter pioneer but I have never really messed with it much. I went over to the beach one night with it and it started raining like 10 min after I got there and I never went back. I should go over and play with it some as people always find stuff around the beaches here.

I have aTesoro Lobo Super Traq and on monday I will also have a Whites GMT that I traded a Ruger New Model Blackhawk for so I can go after some Gold also. Tp date my best find has been a couple of very old Hawaiian coins tht I found before I moved to Las Vegas. they were found in Nuuanu Valley on Oahu at an area I used to  hike thru all the time but never realized that it was used as a carriage stop for hawaiians traveling from one side of the island to the other. A pic is attached for all you guys to drool over.

Man, it is going to be very hard to top this one.
Aloha, Kaimi

Last year I purchased a Minelab Explorer II, appears to be a fine machine, but honestly I have not as yet devoted enought time to realize any significant fiinds.  I reside in WA State and have spent most of my time on the coast looking for "treasure."

I see that my Hawaiian coins didn't get posted for some reason, so hopefully here they are for your review.

And now for the results of my GMT. After opening it up and checking out the batteries I blazed to one of the most used volleyball pits and found these.

And if you think that was enough then the day after Christmas i went out to Franconia, AZ and found my very first meteorite. My hunting pals said that I was just too darn lucky for my own good as no one finds something this big the first time out. I guess having a Sister, yep she is a nun, for a sister helps out with those rocks from Heaven.  ::)

It weighs over 250 grams for sure as my scale hit overload immediately. I just have to wait for my new 500 gram scale to show up next week so I can post the final results. This is such a great hobby! ;D

I have a GTAX 750 started with a bounty hunter.  Living in KY I own 114 acres of woodlands no homes. Have a voting map for the area from 1849. So in the winter with nothing else to do, I search my farm.... All metal mode 12'' coil. Now there is alot of arrowheads on the farms around me, so my thoughts are Indians were like us they lost things. So far the best find is a .36 cal round lead ball. Found a ton of shotgun brass. squirrl hunters. 12'' coil can detect a #6 shot at about 4'' This is about half the size of a BB. I still wonder who had that lead ball, was it fired at game at ?. Thanks for having a GREAT site.   Camoman22
