Taurus Tracker .357 Magnum
« on: April 27, 2006, 06:12:26 PM »
I bought my Tracker in March '05. It has a 4-inch ported barrel and holds seven rounds. To date I have about 1200 rounds through it and the more I shoot it, the more I like it and the smoother it gets! I only shoot double action slow fire and rapid fire. My handloads are a little less than full power. Most of my magnum loads are 180 grain Oregon Trail Laser-Cast flat points over 10.1 grains of Accurate No.7 or 10.7 grains of VV N110 with CCI #500 primers. I like the feel of the gun as I have small hands. The RIBBER grips are tremendous and offer excellent control. The gun locks up tight timing-wise and has a simple, built-in and very effective gun lock.

I like the look of the Tracker. Can you get them unported?

I have about 2000 rounds thru my Tracker now and it is about as smooth as it's going to get by shooting it. Now I'm ready for someone to do an action job to lower the DA trigger pull. Anyone have suggestions for a gunsmith that will work on a Taurus?

Thanks,

I have the 6 inch SS tracker and 4 inch SS M66.  Both have thousands of rounds through them with no problems.  Both are smooth, accurate, and dependable.  I like the grips and the overall looks of the tracker over the M66.  But I like the unported barrel of the M66 over the ported tracker barrel.  IMO the recoil reduction of a 357 is not worth the extra noise of the ports.  However, I would not give up the ports on my Raging Bull 454.  Just wear ear protection - even when hunting.

I am intrigued by the 6" version of the Tracker 357...Seems like it could be a nice up close and personal deer gun with the right cartridge...

I really like my Tracker too, but all of the recent talk about quality has kept me from buying another.  As far as improving the trigger pull on mine I called Wolff Gunsprings and they sent me a kit.  I had to go with the second to the lightest spring.  The lightest spring in the kit was not giving me consistant firing in double action or single action.

In my 4-inch 357 Tracker, 180 grain RNFP "Silver bullets" from Oregon Trails over VihtaVuori N110 or Accurate #7, loaded a little below maximum, shoot the best in terms of accuracy and consistancy at 25 yards.

I have the 8 inch Titanium Tracker in 357 and like it a lot.  I am running similar loads to those listed and it is a very accurate handgun.  I have several thousand rounds through mine and it works well now although early on I did have some issues with it.

I love my 4" .357 Tracker. Its double action is great. Shoots fast and accurate. Only cost me $299(Australian) plus $50 for a Hogue grip. - Pete

I have another good Tracker 4" barreled. Put a bunch of rounds thru it with no problems. It is my go to woods gun. Took a little button buck couple years ago, using Federal Fusion 158 grain JSP. This has been a good accurate round thru my gun, more accurate that 125 grain Speer Gold dots.  With this little Button buck, the bullet went in the front chest (He was facing me) travelled thru the chest and down the leg breaking the leg. I shot him under 20 yards.

Back when I was having the initial issues with mine I lost a BIG buck with it.  Hit it hard and knocked it down 20 yards away and went to shoot it again and the cylinder wouldn't rotate.  Tracked the buck for 1/2 mile and lost blood.  At least a 150 class buck as I have game camera picts of him.

Update:  I think I figured out how to post a picture!!  Here is a picture of the buck:

I've got at 4 in ported Taurus 357.mag, took it out shoot this weekend, it has maybe had a 100 rounds through it ( live in the city and don't to shoot it unless I go to my hunting lease), anyway, we out to the old shale pit and was shooting at a bottle about 20 yards.  I aligned the front and rear sight, left and right flush across the top, and covered the target with the front sight, from a solid, supported position and it was hitting 1 foot low, so I adjusted my sights at least 4 clicks up, and fired another cylinder, and it was still hitting low, so I just held over the top of my target and eventually, knocked it over, but still didnt hit it.  However, I was putting in some good groups, all low.

Previously, that morning I had shot at a hog from not farther than 15 yards 5 times, 4 from from a rested position, aiming dead center of the body and neck, with 1 shot while it was running, and 1 shot as it was moving ( about to run over my dad who was filming all this)  with my left hand ( i am right handed).  What was funny, is that after that last left handed shot, the hog ran into a tree, fell over and just as the dogs go to him, so did I and I worked him over with a Western 49 Bowie knife.  Which, ended up making it impossible for me to find the bullet holes (if there where any in the chest area). No bullets holes where found in the back end or head, or neck.

I aint the greatest shot, but I aint the worst, especially from a rested position.

What do yall think, need to adjust the sites or just practice more?

Mine is the exact same way, consitantly shoots way low. Even after adjusting the rear site the hole way up it is still too low. In able for it to shoot close to where it is pointed I use just the front site, lining up the bottom of the site with where I want it to shoot. yeah, it covers the hole target but that is the only way I can get it to shoot close to point of aim.
There's nothing like the sound of the bullett taking out it's target.

I have a similar issue with mine.  It shoots way low at least one time out of seven shots. I'm going to load one cartridge at a time until I find out if its the cylinder or something else.
