Author Topic: IMR 4064 for 45-70 (Read 1326 times)

I bought a loading book at GANDER Mnt for 45-70 it has over a thousand loads for it from several diferent sources. They all show imr 4064 for 400gr jacketed bullet but not lead, Where should I start if I want to shoot 4064 with lead ? Does lead bullets case higher pressure than jacketed bullets?

I don't think it would make a whole lot of difference. IMR4064 is a very slow powder for the 45-70. I doubt you can get enough of it in the case to reach dangerous pressures. 55 grains compressed under a 405 grain bullets only generates 26,700 CUP. The Marlin 1895 45-70 has a safe operating pressure of 40,000 CUP.

4064 is too slow to, I would go with 4198 or Reloader 7.

I have used a lot of 3031 and Reloader 7 for the 45/70 with good results. A while back I tried some 2400 in my Marlin and like it just fine. 4064 is too slow for the 45/70.

My Buffalo Classic takes a 300jhp Hornady over 58 gr. 4064 or a 400FN Speer over 54 gr of 4064 into a jagged hole slightly under one inch at a hundred yards. Some of my friends doubted it but three whitetail went down this year, all with the 400 speer and 54 gr. IMR 4064. The guns were my BC, Marlin 1895SS, and a Handi. The only thing slow was us dragging them out. Correction: The Marlin used the 300jhp Hornady load.

Thanks for info. I am only looking for around1750 to 1800 fps with 400 grn bullet. I din't plan on meeting anything bigger than whitetail with it. If I need to hunt T rex then I wll need to supe it up some more.

You'll be just fine if you find the best shooting load between 50 and 55 grains of IMR4064 in the 45-70 with a 400-405 grain bullet.

bullets. Thus, they should have a little lower pressure than the

In general, I think one can expect somewhat lower pressure with cast bullets than jacketed bullets of the same weight. Even hard cast bullets are softer than pure or gilded copper, cast bullets usually have less bearing surface because they are shorter and have lube grooves, and they are lubed. Hence, a lower coefficient of friction. However, it is not always true that a cast bullet of equal weight over an equal charge will see less pressure than a jacketed bullet. Cast bullets are also often oversized 0.001" to 0.003" over groove diameter and the entire bearing surface must be "resized" and engraved as it is forced down the barrel. So this can tip the balance the other way, especially in high BHN bullets.
