Case hardening SKS sears?
« on: April 28, 2006, 08:51:46 PM »
I've been doing trigger jobs on them for years, but have always had worries about the quality of steel in some. Whenever I'm in doubt, or the steel doesn't feel right when I work it, I replace it with new. But I've been wondering if it wouldn't be a better idea to just adjust the sear, then case harden it as a precaution.

I've seen some made of very soft metal and some made of hard metal. I was wondering if perhaps the process would harden the surface of lower grade steels, while hopefully not ruining the higher grade ones. It's hard to tell what they're made of.

New SKS sears are getting harder to find and more expensive. I'm hoping this might be a solution, as well as maybe ensure the trigger job wears well and stays safe longer.

Thanks for your input.

The problem is that the heat that hardens the case material would also harden the steel used aas the base metal of the sear, perhaps to a dangerous level. The problem is the poor heatreat and the total lack of metalurgical knowledge about the sears. The outside needs to be hard but the sear has to avoid chipping or cracking.. There is a process called flash hardening where the part is heated quickly, too quickly for the material to heat thru, and then quenced. The result in therory is a hard exterior and a tough interior. That's too unsure a job for a sear.. Better to spend the money than assume the liability risk,..

Gunnut, thanks for your input. I guess I try to buy up a bunch of sears when I find a good price. I wish someone would come along and make a high quality replacement sear. Thanks again.
