Family shootout today
« on: April 29, 2006, 07:31:36 AM »
Woohoo!

A good portion of the family and some friends are meeting for a spring shootout.

Gonna finally get to sight-in my .223 Ultra Varmint.   ...them maybe ream it out in my uncles machine shop after it gets dark.  Definately lopping off about an inch from my Ruger Vaquero 45LC tonite there.

I'm taking along:

45-70 Handi and BC
.223 Ultra (the one I restocked)
45acp 1911
45LC Vaquero
Bersa Thunder 380
Virginian Dragoon Silhouette 44mag
1851 Navy 44 cap & ball
and my .38spl derringer.

I should probably stop for some more pistol ammo before heading out though.  :D

Hopefully I'll remember to post a range report for the NEF/H&R's once I get back.   With any luck the .223 will perform as nicely as my 45-70's.

You all have a good day!

Now that puts a new spin on:

"FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND FELLOWSHIP"

More like:

"FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND FIREARMS" :D

Heres the low-down on the .223 Ulty..

It took about 10 shots for it to settle down.  Then I fired off a 5 shot group to relocate.   Then 3 three shot groups to fine tune, then the last 3 shot group being final.

Results were a 5/8" group at 100 yards with Blackhills 52gr JHP Match ammo.

Not bad I think..  Even my uncle was impressed to say the least.  He's sorta snob when it comes to firearms.   I'm happy.  I might just pass on reaming this one out to 220 Swift, saving the reamer for another barrel.

The 45-70's performed as expected, just like the way I had left them.  They've been tack drivers within 5 shots right out of the box.  My 14yo cousin really liked the Handi, he struck the 2"x2" iron plate on first shot at 50yrds.   Each person took a shot with nearly everyone hitting it.  Not too many fans of the BC because of the metal buttplate.

I think the biggest "event" was when we were all shooting cap & balls at the double axe heads (ball splitting) at 30yrds.  ..no one managed a split, but there sure was alot of smoke in the air.  lol

I would most definately keep the .223 if it is shooting like that. That is some fine grouping in my book. Congrats on a fine day of shooting :D
