300 H&H, What do you think of it?
« on: April 29, 2006, 10:54:31 AM »
Greetings, kicking around a 300 H&H, was looking for a 375 H&H but am questioning if I really need that much horse power.

Pretty much looking at the Remington 700 Classic or a 721.  Any suggestions?

My 300H&H is wonderful. Uses the least powder for equivaliant hitting power of all the 300's
It feeds smoothly because of the tapered case.
If you are looking for a used rife, have agunsmith check it out. Some people have had them converted to other magnums without a barrel stmp

The 300 and 375 H&H cartridges are both excellent hunting rounds. I have both and the 300 is my choice in 30 caliber magnums. The Remington 721 or the 700 Classic would both serve you well. If you can fine a nice one for a good price, get it, you won't regret it! 8)

Thank you for assistance.  I am thinking about an Africa hunt and have become somewhat captivated by the classic Holland and Holland cartidges.

A lot of places in Africa, .375 is the smallest allowable cartridge, look up the regulations before you make your purchase.  For anything in north america though, the .300 is great choice.

Back around 1982-83 I bought the Rem 700 Classic when it was offered in the 300 H&H.  I shot it a few times using Rem ammo and found it to be very accurate out to 200 yds.  The recoil was less than my Mod 700 BDL .30-06.  I've read where the long tapered case helps reduce recoil.

I missed the .375 Classic when it was brought out.  I would like to find one as a match for the 300.

My #1 Rifle is an old M70 originally chambered in .300H&H and subsequently modified to .300 Weatherby. I absolutely love the rifle and the cartridge, but truth be told... there was never a reason to develop a .300 Magnum after the H&H. From a practical standpoint, none of the deviations is significantly better... and most of them can't fire a 200 or 220 grain bullet. By my reconing the only real justification for a magnum is the ability to fire a heavier bullet, so I'd say the H&H is still better than 90% of the .300 Magnums.

Get it. It is a classic round and just a lot of fun to shoot.

I'd opt for the 300

I've got Classics in 300 H&H and 300 Weatherby as well as a 375 in a Winchester Model 70.  Without a doubt I find the 300 H&H to be the most pleasant to shoot and this particular rifle will group its favorite loads well but is a bit finicky about what it likes. :D
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.
