mould for .500 S&W
« on: April 29, 2006, 12:17:53 PM »
Hey guys (and hopefully gals,), I am going to be purchasing a .500 S&W, and can't find much in the way of bullet molds in the 450 gr. WFN design.  I would love a LBT, but understand that Veral will be away for a while.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

I use Ballisti-Cast #1454 which weighs 368 grains when cast from linotype powered by 15.5 grains of Unique.  Accurate with out being overpowering.

Thanks Kenneth for the heads up on Ballisti-Cast molds, I believe I had heard of this company before, but never looked into their products.  I will now.  Thanks for the info.

You might try the on-line design at Mountain Mold. (mtngun@mountainmolds.com).  Dan does nice work at a really fair price. What's really cool on Dan's site is you can see an image of the actual bullet change as you change the design. It's really easy to use and I recieved my mold in about 4 weeks. This is my 600 JDJ bullet I designed myself on his site:

Dictator, thanks for the reply, I have ordered 2 molds from Mountain Molds a year or so ago,  and just got on their web site to play around and design something for the 500.  The site says they are moving and won't be making molds again until August I believe.  AAARRGGH!

Yeh, that's kinda long. You might drop Dan a message and see if he can make it faster. I ordered mine and then I noticed the same message that there could be a substancial waiting period afer I had already placed the order, but he made mine up in about 3-4 weeks.

LAH, I haven't really considered a keith style bullet as I'm really sold on the wide flat nose design.  If you have some leads on mold makers that I'm unaware of, I would like to hear about them though.  Castaway, I actually just got one of the Lee molds, the design is great, and it casts close to advertised weight, but the crimp groove is almost nonexistant.  I don't have the gun to test these out yet, but I bet they won't stay crimped over 1200 fps.  I'll let you know, thanks guys.

The bullet pictured (sorry picture) is one of my design. Ballisti Cast cut the mould for us. We sold these to several customers but had few reports. The bullet came in at 400 grs.

BTW nothing wrong with the WFN if that's what you want. Just letting you know other there's other stuff for the 500.

LAH, sorry for the confusion, I was trying to answer 2 guys with one post.  The Keith style you posted does look good, and I may try it as I have had good accuracy with this style of bullet.  The bullet with the shallow crimp groove I was talking about was the Lee 440 mold that I just bought.  I don't care for Lee molds in general, but for 16$ I figured it would give me something to try when I got the gun in.  Thanks.

I believe you'll like your 500. As for Lee moulds I've had mixed results. Some have cast as well as any and some I couldn't get the needed results reguardless of what I did.
