Katahdin 460 test fired
« on: April 29, 2006, 09:14:24 PM »
The good news is....great fun to shoot, nice handling, I like the rear Peep and fiber-optic front sight and ballistically impressive; 3 shot string Hornady 200gn SST averaged 2874 fps with a hi of 2940.
300gn Cast Performance LBT over a starting load of H110 averaged 2092 fps. recoil and Muzzle blast both better than I expected. Not bad at all.
The bad news..... the bbl. is on it's way back to T/C to have the chamber inspected. Here's a copy of the text I enclosed with bbl.

"I believe the chamber to be oversized and possibly off center as evidenced by the bulge in the spent cases just ahead of the web area. (Sample Cases enclosed)
Note that these cases were fired from an “indexed” position with the “&” in S&W aligned with the extractor in the case of the 460 brass and the “C” in Colt in the case of the 45 Colt brass also aligned with the extractor.
Notice that the bulge in each case is most predominant from about the 6 o’clock to around 2 o’clock with 6 being at the extractor. Not what you’d expect if the Extractor were pushing the cartridge to the top of the chamber? (Which incidentally, I think, is more of an issue with rimless cases.)
Also, why is the throat cut so deep on these chambers? I couldn’t begin to reach the lands, even with a 300gn bullet started in the case backwards."

The comments on the indexing and orientation of the bulge were added as a result of phone conversation with T/C tech person. The first person I spoke with just told me to try Cor-Bon ammo then passed me off to somebody else. The second person I spoke with seemed to be genuinely concerned but all he could really say was "send it in and we'll take a look".
The accuracy was pretty disappointing also. 3-4 inches @ 25yd.
It's great to have customer service, it'd be even better not to need it.
Hurrah fer mountain doin's- :D
