another stock modification...
« on: April 30, 2006, 06:09:09 AM »
Hi guys, well things have slowed down around here a bit and I am trying to catch up. I finally was able to complete another H&R stock modificatin, this one from an older pistol grip stock to a straight english style stock. The angles were different on this older stock and a bit more wood had to be removed for the lines to look correct but I think it came out pretty well. The stock modification was completed on a stock sent to me by Tallyho for one of his guns. The work was part of a deal we had worked out. He and his wife are probably on the road and about half way through driving to thier new home base as we speak. I am going to wrap and pack the stock and get it ready to be at the Post Office for Priority Mail first thing in the AM. It can be a house warming gift for him. On this one I only did the woodwork and staining, he has elected to do the finish himself, he wants to match the finish to a mannlicher forearm he has plans re-do and set up a gun with.

I tried and tried but could not get the pictures to post, I have imposed on my buddy Quick to assist this retired and still computer illiterate  old timer with the pictures, he said he would help, Thanks Quick!!!....<><....

Great Job, MSP!  They both look very professional.  Exellent wood working.  What type of stain did you use?

Nice work...

Now for your "Master"'s thesis... transition a straight grip English-style stock into a pistol-grip-monte-carlo-style stock!  :-D

OK guys, from my time helping my buddy in his auto body shop there is no repair enough Bondo won't fix!!! I'll bet we can make a straight English style into a pistol grip Monte Carlo stock, the grain may not match exactly though, it might be best to paint it. I see it a a green candi apple with gold metal flake and about 5 coats of clear coat!!!:-D :-D  :-D

I used to use oil base stains but after reading they will not work well on these pallet wood stocks (funny, they always worked for me in the past?) I tried a water based Minwax stain in a Rosewood color. The water based stain is suposed to be easier for a beginner to use, BULL, it's more difficult to get ot on correctly without streaks. 2 medium coats on a pallet wood stock gives a shade which pretty closely approximates a nice walnut color. I tried 2 heavy coats and left it on longer on a standard plain brown laminated buttstock I converted from a laminated Monte Carlo w/recoil pad to a standard non-Monte Carlo w/recoil pad. It came out fine also but a bit darker, closer to a dark rosewood rather than a walnut. I seem to prefer the classic reddish dark walnut color myself, just a traditionalist at heart. This last stock really resembles a nice walnut stock I have on a pre 64 Model 94 30-30. When tallyho gets a couple of coats of Tru-oil (or Tung oil, which is what I usually use) this is going to be one sweet looking stock. Because of the nice subtle grain it is very difficult to tell it from walnut...<><....

 MSP Ret, good work on that wood. I bet the pictures don't do it justice. That buttpad reminds me of the ones on the old Toppers. A mixture of half and half of cherry and walnut water base stain will give you a nice reddish walnut look on this pallet wood. Hunman55

Wow, those look excellent. What an improvement over the standard profile. I'm gonna give that a try myself.

I've always had trouble using stain (Oil or water) on birch, beech and ash (I assume that the H&R stocks are beech). The last beech stocks I did I used an aniline dye with good results. I'll have to try an oil-based stain on my handi and see how it comes out.

I used a rubber Pachmayer basket-weave pad recently (This isn't an H&R stock, and it has an extra spacer for added LOP). They're kind of nice on low-recoil rifles that don't need a really squishy pad.

Victor3 your stock looks great also. Those pictures are of the same stock on different backgrounds. The true color is most closely approximated by the second photo with the green background. They think they may look different because of the light. I believe the recoil pad is a old Topper pad, the lines of this older (Topper?) stock were a bit different from the newer stocks I have done it required removing a bit more wood to get it to look right with a straighter bottom line. The newer stocks require a bit less wood be removed....<><....

Well on my way to having a stock the way I want it. This was a Monte Carlo with pistol grip. To get to this point only took about 1/2 hour on the band saw and belt sander. New recoil pad is on the way from Brownells.

Thanks MSP!

BTW, if anyone is contemplating doing this, be advised - If you're not careful about how much wood you remove at the front of the comb, you can break into the large hole in the stock...

For the record, I was off line at the old place and not yet at the new place when Andy started this thread. In addition was travelling with a rental truck and trailer from Albuquerque NM to Blaine WA.

Now am online again and checking back in.

And yup! Andy did a good job on this stock (like he did on another one for me around Christmas time). I haven't unpacked my guns, nor set up a workspace in my new garage, so I haven't done anything with the stock but appreciate it. And as he mentioned my plan is to finish it with Tru-oil when things settle down.

In any case, Andy is a great guy, and though I now live on the opposite coast from him, and have not had the actual pleasure of meeting him face-to-face, I definitely consider him a friend :D  :D  :D

Thanks Andy.

Cheers
Kerry

Your welcome Kerry, I am happy to be able to help a friend, even one I have not met. I have been the recipient of so much help and goodwill by my brothers on this forum I am thankful for the oppurtunity to be able to give back in some way. There are so many here that have been so good to me it gets me a bit "misty", I am not used to others doing for me but many here have done so much for me!!! Be sure to post some pictures of your completed stock project for us all to see. I'm glad you and your wife made the trip safely, and good luck in the new location.

Victor3, good looking job you have going there, keep it up and make sure you post more pictures as the work progresses and of the completed project!!!....<><....
