OK guys, from my time helping my buddy in his auto body shop there is no repair enough Bondo won't fix!!! I'll bet we can make a straight English style into a pistol grip Monte Carlo stock, the grain may not match exactly though, it might be best to paint it. I see it a a green candi apple with gold metal flake and about 5 coats of clear coat!!!:-D :-D :-D
I used to use oil base stains but after reading they will not work well on these pallet wood stocks (funny, they always worked for me in the past?) I tried a water based Minwax stain in a Rosewood color. The water based stain is suposed to be easier for a beginner to use, BULL, it's more difficult to get ot on correctly without streaks. 2 medium coats on a pallet wood stock gives a shade which pretty closely approximates a nice walnut color. I tried 2 heavy coats and left it on longer on a standard plain brown laminated buttstock I converted from a laminated Monte Carlo w/recoil pad to a standard non-Monte Carlo w/recoil pad. It came out fine also but a bit darker, closer to a dark rosewood rather than a walnut. I seem to prefer the classic reddish dark walnut color myself, just a traditionalist at heart. This last stock really resembles a nice walnut stock I have on a pre 64 Model 94 30-30. When tallyho gets a couple of coats of Tru-oil (or Tung oil, which is what I usually use) this is going to be one sweet looking stock. Because of the nice subtle grain it is very difficult to tell it from walnut...<><....
