SKS Magazines and 7.62 ammo question
« on: April 30, 2006, 01:34:32 PM »
Whate is a good online source for SKS magazines?  I  specifically need some 10 round detachable mags.

Where can I find Barnaul 7.62X39 ammo? I need the jacketed soft points. They shoot 3" groups @ 100yards from my SKS with open sights.

I have not found detachable magazines to work well in my SKSs. If you are limited to the 10rd mags, stripper clips give you a fast reload with the fixed magazine. The detachables I've seen are slow to change and some are not reliable. Cheaper than Dirt usually has them in the 20 and 30 rd variety. Can't help you much on the ammo, 7.62X39 is in short supply right now. Sounds like you have a really good shooting SKS! A three inch group is outstanding!!!

I agree about the stripper clips instead of the magazine.
It is a much faster reload for an SKS. About the only 7.62x39 I am seeing
right now is the stuff from WOLF. I don't like it because it burns so dirty,
but I am about to buy a case of it simply because I think cheap ammo is becoming a thing of the past in that caliber. (and several other calibers for that matter)

Yes I am very happy with the accuracy of this rifle, but I believe it's due to the ammo. The barnaul stuff shoots consistent and accurate. I cannot say the same for wolf. I believe the Barnaul stuff uses boattails too, plus it's a softpoint for good expansion.

I am a huge fan of the SKS, The first deer I ever killed was with one.
Although I had it a long, long time before they were ever thought about being imported into this country by dealers. They are rugged, reliable and plenty accurate for their intended purpose. In my opinion, they are the most bang for the buck on the market today.

Most detachable mags are problematic. It's best to just stick with the factory mags and stripper clips. Not only can you carry more ammo that way, but with a little practice, it's actually faster to load with them.

Good luck on the Barnaul. It's hard enough just to find 7.62x39 ammo right now. I haven't seen any Barnaul in a while. I can't find my favorite "Effect" ammo either. Until the ammo starts coming in again, it's pretty much Wolf or domestic brands.

For $30 you can probably buy enough stripper clips for 500 or more rounds. Using ths SKS stripper clip is at least as fast as changing out a detachable mag on one and less prone to problems!

Bag of 20 stripper clips (enough for 200rds) is $4 at CDNN.  FAR more reliable and quicker then piddling around with the detachable mags - which are junk anyways.

:D I use the thirty round detachable mags and have never had a problem with them.  I have also used the stripper clips with no problems. I don't have any experience with the ten round detachable mags, but from what I have seen at the range, I can get 60 rounds off in about half the time it takes someone using the stripper clips.

rockbilly,
How many rounds do you need to defend yourself? I've got eight rounds in a shotgun that holds more firepower than I will ever need. Using the SKS for hunting is using a gun with 20% less power than a 30-30 and incapable of using 150 and 170 grain bullets like the 30-30 will. I bought two SKS's and I got one that will pattern fair at 100 yards. The other one I took apart and made a real gun out of it - a 35 caliber with 180 grain bullets makes it better than it ever was as a 762x39.I bought them to plink with because ammo is cheeper than 22 LR ammo. If you want to reload you have to chase brass all over the range - no thank you very much and if you don't reload you get up to 130 grain bullet at 2200 fps - Hey! a 30-30 gets that much speed with a 150 grain bullet!
I can understand why you need two 30 round mags.

The SKSs are fun plinkers, passable as a battle rifle in a pinch, and can be used as a game getter at reasonable ranges. If a high volume of fire is what you need, get an AK/AR Magazines are readily available and inexpensive, besides, everyone should own at least one AR and one AK!

:D PaulS.  As I said, this is my kick around truck gun, it is (almost) always there for whatever the occasion may be.  As for the 60 rounds, why not?  It doesn't take much more room than it would take for a box of eight extra rounds of 00.

The gun is a Norinco, new out of the box it shot less than two inch groups at 100 yards.  When I started carrying it, it was strictly for wild dogs.  I often see packs on my property that run as high as 12-13 dogs.  They kill cattle, so we take them out whenever possible.  The old 30-30 was OK, but 7 rounds shooting at running dogs eat a lot of ammo, and didn't account for many kills, before I could reload they were in the next county. A friend (about 80 years old) who owns the ajoining property got out of his truck to shoot a bunch of dogs that had a lamb down and was eating it alive.  He killed one dog, shot at a couple of others and was out of ammo.  Walking back to the truck the dogs attack him.  Today he is also packing an SKS with two thirty round mags.

While the gun is mostly for dogs, it also serves as a SHTF preventive instrument.  With the number of illegals passing through this country you never know when you may need the additional ammo.

Cor-Bon makes a 150 grainer for the 7.62x39 that scoots at 2300 fps or so. It's quite accurate compared to most steel cased stuff. Wolf makes 154 grain at 2200 fps and it's more accurate than most 123 grain loads. Not quite as accurate as Barnaul, but close enough.

When you consider the pointed (and often boat tailed) bullets of the 7.62x39 vs. the flat pointed bullets of the .30-30, they compare favorably, especially at the further end of their range.

I have never had much luck with hi cap detacheable mags. I have one SKS that I hand fitted some 30 round mags to, and they work "well enough" but I wouldn't want to trust my life to them. Maybe the Triple K mags are better.

I think the problem is a combination of loose tolerances in the SKS manufacture, combined with low quality of most detacheable mags. If you can hand fit them, and the mag itself will work, they shouldn't be too bad. I just prefer to use strippers on my other SKSes. It isn't worth the effort trying to make hi caps work.

PaulS, what cartridge did you convert yours to? That sounds like an interesting setup. I'd like to tinker more with mine and something like that sounds good. Thanks for any info.

I have owned 2x30 round USA mags and never had a problem out of them, very reliable, with the 10 round magazines I'd just stick with stripper clips personally, but the remington 7.62 is good accurate ammo as well i just wouldnt want to shoot it for fun, wolf is great for that a lot of people dont like it but to each his own.
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.
