45-70 BC and 243 bull?
« on: April 30, 2006, 03:16:15 PM »
I know it has been talked about alot and I have read most everything everyone has on here about it a while ago, and being a lazy college student I dont want to look it up again.  So I am going to ask some basic questions.

Is the barrel round or is it octagon?

How far is the front dovetail from the end of the barrel?

Its drilled and tapped for a rail or mounts so a guy can put a scope on it?

Light or Heavy bullets shoot better.

Im asking because I am sending in my frame and want to know what I can expect because I am going to cut it off to 30" and put a nice target crown on it.  More then likely if it shoots good enough I will be deer hunting with it and 500 grain bullets seem like a good choice or I could go for speed and shoot 300 grain hollow points.

For the 243 bull barrel they are 24"s basically only 2 questions.

Do they shoot good?

What grain bullets shoot the best?

I have everything I need handloading wise for both calibers that is why I am going with these 2.

Thanks

I can answer most of the BC questions.

Barrel = round
dove tail = not sure, left mine at my uncles.
drilled & tapped = mine is.
bullets = mine shoots all very nicely, I tend to stick to 250-300gr slugs for my purposes though..

300gr JHP's work great on these PA whitetail.  ...really make a mess out of woodchuck too.

All H&R/NEF rifle barrels come drilled and tapped for their scope rail. The center of the BC dovetail is ~.640" from the muzzle. Mine shoots up to 539gr bullets accurately at 100yds, haven't shot anything farther than that yet. Bernie shoots hits accurately with 500gr+ bullets at 800yds. The BC muzzle comes with a recessed target crown, you can always install a dovetail blank instead of cutting the barrel shorter to loose the dovetail. There's one on both of these....

My .243 Ultra Varmint shoots 95 Fusion and 100gr Hi-shoks extremely well, but others like 80-85gr bullets, each is different, find what shoots the best and you'll be happy.

Will the Frame/Barrel handle 45-70 +p loads?  Buffalo Bore has some interseting loads that come close to 458 Win Mag loads.
I loaded up some 243 cases with 70 grain Nosler Ballsitic tips and 40 grains of Varget because I was bored on Sunday night.  Ill do load development after I get it, has anyone shot 70 grain bullets out of the NEF?

Yes..it will..but bear in mind those loads are very punishing to most shooters..and you might want to have a good recoil pad like a Limbsaver installed on it..along with a good soft cheek piece..and a couple pounds of lead in the stock..

Joshua my son goes nuts over these laminated stock. This is a new color to him the black really excited him. Guess we need to get a 35 Whelen with a black laminated stock. Where would be good place to locate this combination. Does NEF have these stocks???

Don, the only way to find out is to call and ask em. I'm hesitant to say they don't cuz sometimes they have stuff that no one knows about!! When I bought this one from em, they said they had no more, but that was then, they could have made more since they do all their own stock work including checkering.

Gunstocks Inc sells their stocks in black/gray laminate, too.
